How Bad Is Android Fragmentation? This Bad.

How Bad Is Android Fragmentation? This Bad.

As Ricardo Bilton at over at VB said earlier today, “The latest data is in, and Android fragmentation is worse than ever.” I couldn’t agree more. Thanks to the folks at OpenSignal who have gathered data from over 680,000 devices that downloaded their app last year, OpenSignal found that 11,868 were completely distinct. This is a HUGE increase from last years 3,997 unique devices. Let’s take a look at the information in visual format, shall we?   When it comes to OS (Operating System) it’s evident that Gingerbread still leads the way with 34.1% share, while Jelly Bean is in close 2nd with 32.3% and ICS (ice cream sandwhich) in 3rd with 23.3%. Obviously, when comparing to iOS there is none. iOS 6 has 95% and iOS 5 has near...

Smartphone Addiction – 9% of US Adults Use Their Phones During Sex, 12% In The Shower (wtf?)

Smartphone Addiction – 9% of US Adults Use Their Phones During Sex, 12% In The Shower (wtf?)

A new chart from Jumio/Harris Interactive shows just how addicted we are when it comes to our smartphones.   Evidently the survey results indicated that 72% of smartphone owners are almost always within 5-feet of their devices.   Not to mention that 3/4 smartphone owners check their devices as soon as they wake up (I’m one of them).  Another 40% check them every 10-minutes. Perhaps it is not such a surprise then that 55% of adults use their phones while driving (guilty on this one too).  Meanwhile, another 35% use them in the movie theater, and 33% do so on a dinner date.  Another 9% use them during sex, and 12% WHILE THEY’RE IN THE SHOWER?! Seriously.  More in the chart below. About the Data: The 2013 Mobile Consumer Habit survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Jumio between June 13-17, 2013, among 2021 U.S. online adults (of whom 1102 respondents are smartphone owners/users) aged 18 and...

Native App’s VS Responsive Design [INFOGRAPHIC]

Native App’s VS Responsive Design [INFOGRAPHIC]

Thanks to the folks over at TABLEXI we have a great infographic to share with you today. It breaks down the 10 questions you should ask when considering building an native app vs having a web-app with responsive design. More in the infographic below, enjoy. Update: I noticed that on the stop sign point in this infographic it says that the approval process can take anywhere from a week – several months.  That is not true.  The average approval time has been 6 days as of recently for the iOS App Store, and 4 Days for the Mac App...

58% Prefer Amazon When Comparing Prices on Mobile

58% Prefer Amazon When Comparing Prices on Mobile

A new study conducted by Parago has shown that 58% of adult smartphone users and 1/3rd of all US shoppers regularly ‘show room’ (when a shopper compares the in-store price to an online source via their mobile device, or when they get home on desktop or tablet). Interestingly, the study found that between Amazon and Google, only 26% go to Google to compare prices. The study also found that a $5 difference will usually sway the customer either way with 67% of showroom shoppers saying they would buy in-store if the item price matched to that on Amazon. Parago CMO Rodney Mason, said: “Even the retailer practice of offering exclusive items and SKU’s is being worked around, as shoppers are now being served up similar items at lower prices on their smartphones, and they are buying them.” More in the images...

62% of UK Women Use Their Phones During Sex

62% of UK Women Use Their Phones During Sex

I could totally put a good one-liner here, but I will refrain myself from doing so. Vouchercodespro.co.uk has surveyed near 2,000 people in the UK to find that 62% of women have used their phone during sex vs 48% for men. When analyzing things on a more granular level the top 5 reasons for doing so are: 1) 34% to answer calls 2) 24% to read or send texts 3) 22% to read or reply to emails 4) 12% to make calls 5) 4% to check or update social media accounts including: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram ( I can only imagine). Astoundingly, 34% claim their other half didn’t mind the ‘mobile interruption’. Although, 100% of those people are now single (kidding). Vouchercodespro Spokesperson Greg Charles, had this to say: “The results of this study, although amusing at first, do pose the question of just how much we have all allowed technology to dominate our lives. It is particularly shocking that more women confessed to checking their phones during intimate...

58% of Americans Only Take Pictures via Their Phone

58% of Americans Only Take Pictures via Their Phone

Only 33% actually use a digital camera in addition to their smartphone. This is according to a recent report by Suite 48 Analytics. The report also found: Only 4% of people use a tablet with their smartphone to take, edit, and share photos or even buy products and apps. Only 5% use all three devices. Taking a look at the growth of smartphone camera use, 18 months ago the percentage of people was only 37% compared to today’s 58%. A couple things to observe: 1) How Mobile manufacturers have recently changed their focuses on improving the quality of cameras on their smartphones. I.E. Samsung with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which has 10x optical Zoom. and Nokia, with their Lumia 1020 and it’s 41 mega pixel camera that is claiming to have ‘reinvented the zoom’. 2) Manufacturers are not shying away from cameras all together just yet. Samsung recently released the Galaxy NX which is a camera that has similar smartphone functionalities, wi-fi and access to the app store. Suite...

LEAKED Budget iPhone Video

LEAKED Budget iPhone Video

As if this is something worth writing about.. there have been two leaked videos as of late showing what the new ‘budget iPhone’ might look like. While the video itself only shows the back plate, that’s enough of an indicator for you to imagine what the rest of the phone might be like (excluding its functionality of course). As seen in the video the phone itself appears to be a blend of the newest iPod touch and the iPhone 3GS. It is likely that this ‘budget iPhone’ will replace that of the iPhone 4 and 4S as Apple continues to move forward working on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think in the COMMENT’s...
