China Passes U.S. As World’s Top Smart Device Market

China Passes U.S. As World’s Top Smart Device Market

Well, that certainly didn’t take long.  I thought I just wrote an Article a couple month ago talking about this type of thing.  Probably did.  Not sure where it is.  Let’s continue. Just days into the Chinese New Year’s (Year of the Snake) China has officially passed the U.S. to become the world’s top country for active Android and iOS Smartphones & Tablets. This historic milestone has taken place within only 12months of Flurry reporting China as the the world’s fastest growing smart device market.

In Flurry’s report they have used their entire data set of 2.4 billion anonymous, aggregated applications sessions per day across 275,000 applications around the world. They estimate measuring activity acros 90% of the world’s smart devices.

As seen the in the chart above, the tipping point didn’t actually occur until the end of January but nonetheless China’s growth curve is consistent whereas the same cannot be said about the U.S.  Flurry estimates that by the end of this month (February) 2013 – China will have 246 million devices compared to 230 million in the U.S.  If that wasn’t enough for the patriarch to take in, Flurry concludes that the U.S. will not take back the lead from China given the vast difference in population between the two countries.  1.3 Billion vs 310 Million (China-US).  The only other country in that aspect of things that could possibly take China over then would be, India – but it’s not likely that that will happen anytime soon, as India currently only has 19 million active smart devices (as seen in the chart below).

It also shows that the U.S. and China have more than 5x the active install base that hat of the U.K., currently the world’s 3rd largest market. What’s intersting to note however, is that, when it comes to Device Adoption Columbia is killing it.  While the U.S. doesn’t even rank China sits at 6th with 209% while Columbia, Vietnam, and Turkey are in the top 3 with 278%,266%, and 247%.

To wrap up, it’s always interesting to see how the market continues to evolve.  I always have a little chuckle when I see tech analytics firms predicting 5 years into the future as if no disruption of any kind is to take place.  I guess we all have to make our coin in one way or another.
