1.4 Billion Smartphones in Use by 2013 – ABI Research

1.4 Billion Smartphones in Use by 2013 – ABI Research

Certainly seems like quite a few doesn’t it?  Especially when you take into consideration last year (2012) was the year that Smartphones activations hit 1 billion (as well as Facebooks user base).  The firm predicts that of those 1.4 Billion smartphones there will be 268 Million tablets, 45 Million Windows Phones, 20 Million Blackberry 10’s, and that Android and iOS will continue to lead the way.

ABI Analyst Aapo Markkanen wrote,

“The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which then would effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success,”

“Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game.”

Also adding in an interview with TechCrunch:

“Based on our current shipment forecasts, we don’t see the installed base of either BB or WP reaching the double-digits within the next five years,”

“It’ll be a slow climb, since if they both stay in the game they’ll be kind of eating into each other’s success. It won’t be that much-touted two-horse race, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a three- or four-horse race either. Maybe a race of two horses and two ponies.”

They also found that ipad devices accountd for 62% of the market which accounts to 166 million devices.  75 million were android tablets, and only 5.5 million expect to be windows-powered tablets.
