Kindle Fire and iPad Mini Taking Off

Kindle Fire and iPad Mini Taking Off

A new report from ad platform Millennial Media has revealed that tablets alone accounted for a substantial amount of impression growth, with Android devices coming full fledged.  Of the Android devices, the Kindle Fire and Samsung tablets were the two dominant share holders with a combined total of 41% of the tablet market, compared to 58% for Apple.     When taking a look at the screenshot below it’s apparent that the Smartphone share of mobile devices also grew considerably from 68% to 75%.  Non-Phone connected devices (Tablets) also growing 5% and most unsurprisingly, Feature Phones regressing from 17% in 2011, down to 5% in 2012.   Millennial notes that Android continues to take up more places in the top 20 mobile phones list on its platform, while Apple continues to reign as the market leader with its own devices generating oustanding traffic from just the few core devices.  The iPad mini in particular, was among Apple’s strongest performers, growing its share of impressions at an average rate of...

Google Glass – One Thing You Probably Haven’t Heard Yet

Google Glass – One Thing You Probably Haven’t Heard Yet

With all the buzz that myself and the rest of the tech/mobile blogs out there have been creating for Google’s Project Glass as of late, there’s something that I stumbled upon that many of you may not have even thought about – yet.  Something that was actually spotted after an ‘extensive look’ of the device by The Verge.  It is said that,   “The device gets data through Wi-Fi on its own, or it can tether via Bluetooth to an Android device or iPhone and use its 3G or 4G data while out and about. There’s no cellular radio in Glass, but it does have a GPS chip.”   While it’s unclear what this type of compatibility will entail, it does infer that Glass will be able to use iPhone’s data connection.  It was previously acknowledged that Google Glass will be able to send text messages, however whether it will work with an iPhone in this manner has not been determined.   As an UPDATE to my article I...

Google Patent reveals Alternative Style to Google Glass

Google Patent reveals Alternative Style to Google Glass

These could very well be the limited edition Warby Parker frames that has surfaced a little around the net.  But in any case,  the US Patent and Trademark Office has published a Google patent application that appears to describe many of the technologies used in the company’s Google Glass Project (that is all the rage right now).  Spotted by TechCrunch earlier today, the filing lists several other embodiments that take a different approach than the Google Glass hardware that so far has been shown to the public.   Particularly describing  a “laser or LED source” and a scanning system to “draw a raster display directly onto the retina.  Some of the descriptions focus on comfort, balancing the weight between the nose pads and the temples, and providing a way for the transparent display to be moved to different positions. While other details provide insight into the on-board computing system and a touchpad for input. If you ask me, if we look at history and how companies like instagram have...

New iWatch Patent Filed – Changes the Game Once Again

New iWatch Patent Filed – Changes the Game Once Again

While I generally don’t like to write about the topic of the iWatch because I think the idea of an iWatch is stupid, this latest updates in what the iWatch could actually end up being – has me thinking about things differently.  The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has released an interesting patent that raises the question, “did everyone get it wrong?”  See the image below, thanks for to the folks over at PatentlyApple.   According to the patent application, Apple is looking into methods that can integrate flexible components into a bi-stable spring, slap on bracelet design. Apple even highlighted a number of use cases for the accessory that would talk to other electronic devices, i.e., iOS devices, such as viewing recent calls, responding to text messages, managing playlists, and viewing maps, quoting Apple,   “The bracelet goes far beyond being a wristwatch. Apple states that with a multitouch display, the user “can accomplish a number of different tasks including adjusting the order of a current playlist, or reviewing a...

In App Purchases to top $3 Billion on Tablets $6 Billion for Smartphones by 2016

According to Juniper Research’s latest report Tablet Gamers alone will spend $3.03 Billion on in-app purchases in 2016. Crazyness. If the prediction is true, this will represent a ten-fold increase on the $301 million that tablet gamers spent in 2012. The surgely undoubtedly is largely due to the rapid tablet adoption and acceptance of in-app purchases with consumers. Juniper notes that virtual currencies, rather than in-game goods, will generate the highest levels of player engagement and spending. When it comes to geographic breakdown of that $3 Billion, Juniper predicts the East will rule in both the US and China. Together these two regions alone will account for 86% of user’s spend in 2016. As for Smartphones.. Juniper believes they will remain the primary source of in-app purchases, estimating gamers to spend more than $6 Billion on in-app purchases in 2016.
