Apple’s Macs Hacked

Apple has confirmed a report from Reuters claiming that, “Apple was attacked by hackers who infected a “small number” of its Mac computers.  Apple allegedly believes that the same unidentified group are the one’s behind the attack on Facebook last week.  In their own words, “Apple Inc computers were attacked by the same hackers who targeted Facebook Inc, but no data appeared to have been stolen, the company said on Tuesday in an unprecedented admission of a widespread cyber-security breach.” Furthermore, in a statement Apple provided to AllThingsD on the matter: “Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers,” the company said in a statement to AllThingsD. “The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers. The one below featured by YouTube User Almanimation shows a ‘Lock Screen Drawer’ feature that gives users easier access to settings.   Another on how a potentially new contact list app might...

Additonally, there are an estimated 1.2 billion mobile gamers. The real exciting stuff though is the growth of iPhones, iPads, and their Android counterparts. Since 2007, the Apps Industry has already created over 500,000 jobs in the US. According to 148Apps.biz there are 792,398 active apps (and counting), of these – 132,963 are games. In terms of overall revenue, in 2012 it was edging towards $10 Billion with games taking over 80% of the pie, as reported by Flurry. When it comes to app consumption on both iOS and Android smart device consumers spend over 40% of all their time in games. With their favorite monetization model being.. *drum-roll* Freemium.   Of the top freemium games, 47% have average revenue per daily active user at more than 25 cents. The average cost per install is around $4 (non-incetivized no doubt for that much). iOS...

5 Tips for Making Your Game Stand Out in A Crowded App Marketplace

It seems like every-single-day someone comes along with “5 more tips” on how to get your app to stand out.  Fact of the matter is, there are countless things you can do to make your app stand out amongst the competition.  Today we’re going to focus on some new ideas that haven’t been covered in the past, some that will hopefully get you to think about your over-all strategy before your app hits the store.   Let’s get into it.   1) Be different Sure there’s a ton of games that are basically clones of other games, but you know the really, really, really successful ones like Minecraft, CSR Racing, Infinity Blade, etc.. all drew from inspiration but inevitably brought something new to the table which allowed them to cut through the massive competition and succeed.   2) Decide on a monetization model early Because, to be quite honest, premiums, free games, and freemiums are all entirely different.  Many arcade-style games for instance don’t fit the freemium model well...

Supercell overcomes EA to take #1 spot for Top Grossing Game and Company on iOS

A new report from Newzoo has been released revealing its market breakdown on the US and Northern European mobile sector. In December, EA was ahead of Supercell, thanks to the 9 games it then had in the top 200 (now 10), but last month – in January, the Finnish outfit Supercell bounced back gaining the top spot.   Clash of Clans remained the top grossing individual title in January, while King.com’s Candy Crush Saga crushed it at #2, Supercell’s Hay Day was in #3 which left The Simpsons: Tapped Out at #4 dropping down 2 spots from where it was in December.   When it comes to Google Play on the other hand, things aren’t quite the same – not even close.  With Korea and Japan being the two most valuable Android markets, it’s the Japanese and Korean companies who’re leading the way (as seen in the image below).   GungHo at #1, NAVER at #2, Mobage at #3, and GREE being all the way down at...
