LINE is big in Japan | Reaches 100 Million Users

100 million users in 19 months.  Not bad when you consider that it took Facebook 54,and Twitter 49.  Part of Korean internet giant NHN Corp, LINE is best known for its growth in Japan where it currently has over 43 million users.  In addition to that though, it has 13 million in Thailand, 12 million in Taiwan, 5 million in Korea and 3 million in Hong Kong.  Personally, I would have suspected Korea to be their largest market seeing as that’s where the holding company is based....

Android Tablets to surpass iPad’s by end of 2013

According to IDC’s latest finding, “smaller, cheaper tablets”  will push sales beyond initial estimates, and also result in Android devices surpassing iPad sales. The firm predicts 191 million tablets will be shipped to market this year, up from previous estimates of 172.4 million.  What’s most interesting is IDC’s view of how Android devices will come out on top of Apple against the market leading iPad.   Research analyst Jitesh Ubrani went on to support their initial claims by saying, “One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size,” “And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond. “Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realize that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits.”   In the end, IDC projects that Android will reach 49% this year, while iOS falls from 51%, to 46%.  For the rest of the market – Microsoft’s Windows 8 currently...

Apple to take 65% of $25 Billion Global App Revenue in 2013

New data from ABI Research says the global app economy will reach $25 Billion this year.  Of that, 35%, or $8.8 billion will be from Tablet apps, and 65%, or $16.4 billion will be from smartphones.  Together, Apple is looking at a 65% share.  ABI says that the overall trend has tablet app monetization outpacing smartphone apps, and expects by 2018 tablet apps will surpass smartphone app revenue – at which point, total global revenue will reach $92 billion.   According to analyst Aapo Markkanen, “The larger screen makes apps and content look and feel better, so there are more lucrative opportunities,” “One might think that the bigger installed base of smartphones would compensate for the disparity, but that notion fails to take into account the arrival of low-cost tablets, which hasn’t even started yet [in] earnest. The smartphones paved the way for them, but in the end we believe that it’s the tablets that will prove the more transformative device segment of the two.”   With that said,...
