New Apple Patent for LockScreen Features

  Apple, like most big tech companies (Samsung, Google, LG, Panasonic, etc..) file a lot of patents for inventions that will likely never come into fruition. Today is no different, Apple has published documents to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office discovered by PatentlyApple, see image below. One of the more noteworthy features is the newly animated lock-screen which would allow quicker access to frequently used apps via new animated feature accessible through a home button that could also recognize pressure input. Sure some might argue that this isn’t something Android hasn’t already had for years, but can you imagine it being on an iOS? It’s about time if you ask me.  These new features will surely help iOS users bypass having to input their security pins just to ‘access’ the things that they should (in theory) already have access to from the get-go. Apple Increases Gap as Leading Smartphone Vendor in US, iOS Takes Share from Android

comScore has released their February monthly report that ranks the top smartphone OEMS (Original Electronic Manufacturer’s  and platforms for the 3 month period ending in February. As seen in the image below, Apple’s distribution increased by near 4% (3.9%) while Samsungs only increased by 1%.  HTC,Motorola, and LG all showed declining shares between 1.7% and .2%.   One thing to note is: “the shipped vs. sold dispute doesn’t apply to comScore’s results, as its data comes from surveys tracking smartphone subscribers and usage and not sales or units shipped.”   While Apple may lead in OEM, Google still reigns over all with the top OS.  Despite the fact that it decreased from 53.7% (in November) to 51.7% in February, it still is quite a chunk higher than iOS at 38.9%.  Sadly, Blackberry, Microsoft, and Symbian only represent 9.1% of the remaining market (cumulatively).  With Blackberry at 5.4% share, Microsoft at 3.2%, and sad Symbian at 0.5%. ...

Average U.S. User Spends 2 1/2+ Hours on Their Mobile – Flurry

Flurry (who does App Analytics) has  reported that the average U.S. mobile owner spends around 2 1/2 hours a day using their iOS/Android smartphones and tablets. That being said, 80% of time is spent on apps.  The report further indicates that 85% of consumers prefer mobile apps over mobile websites, and the data from Flurry suggests no different. Flurry found that 80% (of the 2hrs and 38mins) of the time is spent inside apps, with the mobile web being consumed for the remaining 20% or 31mins.   While games still reign the most popular with 32%, Facebook took 18%, and entertainment 8%.  As Flurry celebrates their 5th anniversary since launch  they’ve also released the data that its services have added to over 300,000 apps, with more than 1 billion sessions per month.   See the charts below for more info.   New App Usage on devices increased 20% while same app usage decreased 20%. The twitter you have learned to love, and grow with has received a major update (a good one no-less), one that will be VERY helpful to App Developers looking to run some Pay-per-install campaigns. Apple Releases Stats for its Share in ‘Job Creation’ and $8 Billion Paid Out to Developers

It’s always nice to see how things like the mobile, and app industry is affecting every-day lives. People who may otherwise have no place to go. Today we’re going to take a look at a company that has clearly got their sh@t together, and is clearly helping others achieve the same. While there are a lot of stats included in Apple’s report, we’re going to emphasize the ones pertaining to the App Ecosystem.
