58% of Americans Only Take Pictures via Their Phone

58% of Americans Only Take Pictures via Their Phone

Only 33% actually use a digital camera in addition to their smartphone. This is according to a recent report by Suite 48 Analytics. The report also found: Only 4% of people use a tablet with their smartphone to take, edit, and share photos or even buy products and apps. Only 5% use all three devices. Taking a look at the growth of smartphone camera use, 18 months ago the percentage of people was only 37% compared to today’s 58%. A couple things to observe: 1) How Mobile manufacturers have recently changed their focuses on improving the quality of cameras on their smartphones. I.E. Samsung with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which has 10x optical Zoom. and Nokia, with their Lumia 1020 and it’s 41 mega pixel camera that is claiming to have ‘reinvented the zoom’. 2) Manufacturers are not shying away from cameras all together just yet. Samsung recently released the Galaxy NX which is a camera that has similar smartphone functionalities, wi-fi and access to the app store. Suite...

LEAKED Budget iPhone Video

LEAKED Budget iPhone Video

As if this is something worth writing about.. there have been two leaked videos as of late showing what the new ‘budget iPhone’ might look like. While the video itself only shows the back plate, that’s enough of an indicator for you to imagine what the rest of the phone might be like (excluding its functionality of course). As seen in the video the phone itself appears to be a blend of the newest iPod touch and the iPhone 3GS. It is likely that this ‘budget iPhone’ will replace that of the iPhone 4 and 4S as Apple continues to move forward working on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think in the COMMENT’s...

Apple Rolls out Developer Portal Status Page

Apple Rolls out Developer Portal Status Page

Following Apple’s attempted iOS and Mac Developer Center breach earlier last week, Apple has posted an iCloud-like Status Page so developers can track Apple’s work for re-implementing Developer Portal Features. They’ve also outlined their approach as to what they plan to do to restore those same features: “We apologize for the significant inconvenience caused by our developer website downtime. We’ve been working around the clock to overhaul our developer systems, update our server software, and rebuild our entire database. While we complete the work to bring our systems back online, we want to share the latest with you. We plan to roll out our updated systems, starting with Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, Apple Developer Forums, Bug Reporter, pre-release developer libraries, and videos first. Next, we will restore software downloads, so that the latest betas of iOS 7, Xcode 5, and OS X Mavericks will once again be available to program members. We’ll then bring the remaining systems online. To keep you up to date on our progress, we’ve created...

Google Play Hits 1 Million Apps

Google Play Hits 1 Million Apps

Up from just 500,000 apps last year, and 900,000 just last month, the Google Play store has entered 7 digits. This was officially announced yesterday by Sundar Pichai who leads the Android and Chrome teams here in San Francisco. Naturally, Pichai said something to the effect of the app growth being an evident indicator of Android’s strength on smartphones, but even more so on tablets.  While it may be the case that Apple has also surpassed the 1 Million App’s milestone, Google is first to make the announcement. This means a few things for android, the first obviously being that it has more than 1 million apps now, but is also now the most popular smartphone worldwide (if you measure by that metric). Pichai also announced that Google Play has seen more than 50 billion downloads, which is up from 20 billion just last year. This, and that RPU (Revenue per user) is now 2 and 1/2x more than what it was last...

Line Surpassses 200 Million Global Downloads

Line Surpassses 200 Million Global Downloads

Although they have no report on MAU (monthly active users) which leads to the assumption that perhaps they’re not keeping up with the other social messaging apps in the space which include: WhatsApp which last month announced it had 250 million active users currently leads the way. China’s WeChat however, has amassed a use base of 300 million, and reports it has 190 million MAU’s. Needless to say, seeing as LINE just reported back in January that it had reached 100 million users coming to 200 Million in 6 months is not bad progress. Again, while the # of MAU’s is uncertain LINE previously had mentioned in an interview with Tech Crunch that “the proportion of active to registered monthly Line users can be as high as 80%” On a final note, LINE has recently been seen running TV Ads to acquire users and build awareness (an example can be seen below).   In Q1 LINE reported earnings of $58.9 million, half from in-game purchases and just under 1/3rd...

Mobile Device and App Trends in China

Mobile Device and App Trends in China

As re-mentioned yesterday by Flurry, China has surpassed the US to become the country with the largest smartphone device user base. This was of course originally reported on back in February when Flurry drew the original conclusion. In fact, earlier this year in June Flurry had deduced that China had over 261 million smartphones and tablets. This number represents an astounding 24% of the entire worlds connected user base that flurry measures. As can be observed in the chart below the Worldwide Growth rate compared to China’s. While manufacturing behemoths like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi lead the way with: 35,15, and 16 percent, China’s own Huawei did come out on top in the “Other” category which consisted of over 18 different manufacturers. Indeed it will be interesting to see how the local company fares against the foreign giants. Looking at what Chinese users like to do on their devices – games is where it’s at (for both Android and iOS). Time spent by App Category for each OS breaks down...
