In-game Purchases on Tablets Near 3x Higher Than Smartphones

A study from Magid and Playfirst has shown that 61 million gamers prefer tablets over smartphones. In fact, 69% of tablet owners regularly play games on their device and 31% of them purchase in-game virtual goods.  The average users spends $48 a year, which equates to around $914 million cumulatively. This is nearly 3x the amount spent on smartphones which currently sits at $341 million. Now don’t get me wrong, smartphone still has an average total of 54 million users, which is actually a 50% YOY increase from last year. President of Magid Advisors, Mike Vorhaus, had this to say: “We started seeing the emergence of the tablet as a huge gaming platform last year. Now tablet gaming growth is pushing big increases on in-game virtual goods spending and driving big revenue. “The tablet is really the TV of video – the great majority of tablet owners love tablet gaming, and the tablet is becoming their go-to device for gaming.” Lastly, the average tablet gamer downloaded nearly 25 games...

Chartboost Store Now in Closed Beta for iOS, Android and Unity

Chartboost, the cross-promotion network for mobile developers, with over 16,000 games in their network and 6 billion game sessions every month has recently announced it’s launching a new back-end service that will power in-app purchases and stores inside mobile games. The “Chartboost Store” is said to make it easier for companies that wish to add new items and adjust pricing on the fly without having to go through the inconvenience of doing an update. Additionally, the new store will provide developers analytics as to which items from the store are performing the best to adjust accordingly. While many large game developers already have these technologies there is a large crowd of smaller indies who don’t. At present the company says 5 people are already using their store, and it’s in closed beta for iOS, Android, and Unity. Just when you thought it can’t get any better. Google teases you with an awesome video that makes you want more. All I can say is: “Sorry Yelp, I don’t think ordering capabilities are going to cut it this time”. As reported on 9to5Google yesterday, Google is rolling out this update first to Android with plans of bringing it to iOS ‘soon’ (hopefully we don’t see what happened with GoogleNow happen with this update). Mobile TV and Video Revenues to reach $9.5 Billion by 2017

According to Juniper Research, the company has predicted that, with the more than 2 billion people will be using mobile to view TV and video by 2017 – revenues are expected to double (2013’s projection of $4.5 billion) hitting $9.5 billion.  Collectively, North America, Western Europe and the Far East and China, and generate 80% of the total revenues. At the same time, with the World Cup and the Olympics taking place in Latin America in 2014 and 2016, they’ll be one to keep an eye on for Mobile TV usage as well. It is said that this growth can be attributed to users becoming more familiar with streaming as well as many paying for subscriptions or pay-per-title, via Netflix or iTunes.
