The Death of TurnTable.FM?

The Death of TurnTable.FM?

Things haven’t been looking good for the Social Music Discovery site that had an astounding 360,000 new users in their first 3 months.  They even peaked at  419,000+ MAU (Monthly Active Users) back in July of 2011.  Their valuation a that time was around $37 Million.

Now, Soundrop which had its minor debut around October last year announced this morning that it has launched ‘listening rooms on facebook’.

Turntable.fm is essentially listening rooms not on facebook.  Much like TurnTable.fm..

“artists and fans will be able to create social music spaces where they can listen to music together, chat, and vote on what they want to hear next.”

So what’s the difference?

Well, first of all.  Facebook has 1Billion+ users, and is the #2 most trafficked website in the world.  Vs TurnTable.fm which as shown in the image above..isn’t doing so well (27k+ Monthly visits).

A Soundrop ‘listenting room’ on Facebook is a page running the app, which streams music and video from YouTube or VEVO at the top, allows comments and chatting under the video, and features a social playlist with songs that can be upvoted, promoting them to earlier spots.  Streaming more than 500 million tracks last year as an app on Spotify,  Soundrop is certainly making headway. The company is said to focus on the needs of artists saying,

“We help artists and labels accelerate their traffic and engagement”

CEO Inge Andre Sandvik added,

“We’re excited to make Soundrop available in the main place where artists connect with their fans,”

While headquarted in Oslo, Norway – the company has offices in New York, LA, and London.

  1. There is no comparison between soundrop and TT. the only simalarity is that they are both music websites where you can listen to music. TT blows soundrops doors off. on TT you can search for thousands of "specific" songs to be played in whatever genre you're listening to. with soundrop you're at the mercy of whatever 35 songs are in the rooms list. TT rooms have life and DJ's flow the music together. the TT rooms are not just playlists. a serious radio listener or music lover will give soundrop about 10 seconds before they see it's just a playlist with no flow or soul to it.

    • Hi Steven,
      Thanks for your input.
I suppose we all have our different uses each platform.
I agree that it is nice that TT provides the ability to search for whichever song you’re looking for.
At the same time, I’m sure you’d agree that Sounddrop has a major advantage in leveraging Facebook’s network
similar to how Twitter leveraged their own when they launched the “Vine” app.
This is clearly something TT doesn’t have (yet) if the are to integrate their app directly on facebook vs having it simply as “Login via facebook” (or twitter) I think this would be very interesting to see.

      Thanks again for your input.
