Bumps latest update will have you saying “so long” to your USB Flash Drives

Bumps latest update will have you saying “so long” to your USB Flash Drives

For those of us who don’t use cloud services already, the ones probably walking around with a little thumb stick in their jean pockets..I have some great news. Really.

Have you heard of the App Bump? No? Well you’re about to. In the apps latest update on iOS and Android it allows you to “bump” your phone with your computer to share any file from your phone to computer and vice-versa.

I know, sounds awesome right?

CEO and Co-Founder David Lieb described the added functionality saying,

“we’ve kind of turned Bump into an unlimited and ubiquitous USB drive. So you can throw your USB drive away, as long as you have a phone with Bump on it.”

Adding,

“What we try to do is build products that ‘normal’ people can really engage with,”

“So yeah, you can do all these things if you’re set up on some cloud-syncing solution, but what we find is that normal people don’t really know how to set all that stuff up…we want to build stuff that has low cognitive overhead,”

In terms of the file-sharing capabilities Lieb predicts “normal” use cases, like backing up your phones contacts or saving videos from your phone to your computer.

The files themselves are actually privately stored on Bump’s servers. Users are given a URL if they want to share the files or photos with others. At present, Lieb says there’s no plans on turning Bump into a hosting service for files and photos, but it will continue to work with partners to integrate options for saving files to the wider web. Dropbox being the only one having been integrated thus far, with users also asking for Evernote.

This is a great update that overcomes one of Bumps previous obstacles which was, finding another person who has the Bump app installed in order to use it. This update makes Bump usable to anyone who has the app installed, regardless of whether or not they know someone else who has it.

As of now, Bump only has 5-10% of users ‘bumping’ their PC’s but the traffic is growing rapidly with a 50% increase over the past couple of months. To date, the app has had 125 million downloads and sits at #24 in the ‘Social Networking’ category for iOS and $19 on Android.
