Mobile Malware Grows 163% in 2012 – 32M+ Infected Android Devices
A new report from NQ Mobile released today has pulled malware data from 2012 that show some shocking figures. First, malware threats across all mobile platforms grew 163% in 2012. The attacks were geared primarily towards Android devices, which was the platform of choice for almost 95% of threats according to NQ.
NQ says, trends indicate things are likely to get worse before they get better. In February, a new type of malware that uses an Android device as a launch platform for infecting a target computer via USB connection was identified, the company said. NQ Mobile co-CEO Omar Khans said in a release,
“…what’s needed is a system that can detect threats in advance of infection and prevent them, something which so far hasn’t really been widely available.”
NQ Mobile’s report also revealed that more than 32.8 million Android devices were infected over the course of 2012(up 200% from 2011). Do take note however, Android as-a-whole grew substantially over the course of 2012. In fact, according to a recent study by ABI Research – over 798 million active Android devices will be activated by the end of 2013 VS 300 million +/- as of the same time last year.
NQ’s data also indicates that despite the fact that historically Android has been a big risk for malware, iOS has also recently come under fire for free apps that leak more personal data than on other platforms. While there are certainly anti-virus apps out there, the best anti-virus you can probably have is called ‘common sense’.
Malware includes computer viruses, ransomware, worms, trojan horses, rootkits, keyloggers, dialers, spyware, adware, malicious BHOs, rogue security software and other malicious programs; the majority of active malware threats are usually worms or trojans rather than viruses. In law, malware is sometimes known as a computer contaminant, as in the legal codes of several U.S. states.^.,:
