Mobile Websites vs Native Apps

Mobile Websites vs Native Apps

In todays day and age a company without a mobile strategy is like a company without an email address.  Having an online presence alone just doesn’ seem to be cutting it anymore.  With more than 55% of those in the US posessing smartphones, these device owners need to have a way to interact with your brand on their mobile phone; one way or another.  Whether it be: mobile responsive design, mobile site, mobile site wrapped with a native wrappe, or a good ol’ native app.

Obviously some are more pricey than others, and what’s right for one company may not be the best solution for yours.  Regardless, you should first and foremost consider who your user is and what type of experience you want to deliver to them.

Here’s an example..

AllRecipes.com contains a huge repository of recipes on their website, which they could easily be transfered to a mobile site. The thing is,  people who are checking Allrecipes on their devices aren’t trying to read recipes, they are trying to make a meal. With that in mind, Allrecipes.com went on to create the Dinner Spinner app, which helps users do just that with a shopping list builder, intuitive recipe finder and “kitchen friendly”/ad-free view. All the while, optimizing content to appeal to the real scenario at hand.

This being said, having an app was the best way to leverage the existing appeals of mobile convenience and form. Arguably, a native app is the best way to engage your customers on mobile.

Here’s an image by the folks over at Localytics to show the differences between the two.
