New iMacs to be delayed till next year?

New iMacs to be delayed till next year?

As spotted earlier today by 9to5mac

Retailers were expecting to receive the new 21.5″ inch iMacs by Nov 27th this month, (right in time for black Friday) and the 27-inchers later in December.  The retailers source went on to blame a welding process for the delays, which would push the iMacs into 2013. The new iMacs also have a redesigned display that features a new thinner lamination process.

The technique utilizes intense heat and pressure  to create even more seamless joins than previous techniques. Apple CEO Tim Cook had previously acknowledged in a conference call to analysts that the iMac would see “significant shortages” but did not specify why, and continued to expect that the new iMac would make its original November and December delivery dates.

Something else that might slow down the product of the iMac is the new screen lamination process, which is said to be more ‘involved’ and difficult than previous iMac models.  The screen bonding used in the new imac  takes off 2mm of thickness that had formed a “air gap” between the glass and display in previous models.

I imagine if Foxconn assembling the new iMac won’t be any easier than the iPhone 5 they noted to be having trouble with in the past.  At the same time, Foxconn is already looking into replacing their assembly line workers with assembly line robots in the near future, so we’ll see.

I anticipate Apple will not disallow customers from ordering the new iMac later this month (next week already geez) but instead show longer than expected delivery times to cope with the difficulties of the manufacturer.

I hope they figure this one out, as I was looking to get my hands on one of those “27-inchers” 🙂
