And Then There Were 3 – BlackBerry to Go Private?
Mobile Operating Systems that is. With a market cap of about $5.6 Billion, BlackBerry temporarily halted trading in its shares today and announced the company had formed a special committee to research outside opportunities for the company – including: joint ventures, or even a sale of the company.
As reported earlier today by MarkeWatch, BlackBerry revealed in a statement:
“there can be no assurance that this process will result in any transaction.”
Reuters has also reported hearing form their own sources that BlackBerry may in fact go private. Earlier this year BlackBerry announced the BlackBerry 10 (Z10 and Q10), which doesn’t appear to be doing so well.
If BlackBerry does in-fact go private it will be interesting to see how this will affect their current position in OS share. More so, if it will give Windows the opportunity to break away and claim the #3 spot.
