App Annie Index – Game and Non-Game Top Apps for July 2013

App Annie Index – Game and Non-Game Top Apps for July 2013

Well that month certainly went by quick. Geez, another 60 days or so and it will be Halloween! With all this buzz around 3D Printing I am considering printing an Iron Man suit and replacing the plasma cannon with some type of device that can emit dry ice like smoke. But any way, App Annie has released their July Index's for game and non-game apps. Instead of having to go check them out on each of their respective pages on App Annie's website, I thought I'd do you the favor by summing up the important stuff and including the charts below.

With that being said, let's jump into it!

July has indeed been a big month for Android when it comes to emerging markets. a recent report from IDC shown that Q2 YOY shipments have inreased 30% for devices with Android loaded on them. Messenger apps are also said to be taking over the world. primarily LINE and WhatsApp (I use that app every-day 🙂 ) Needless to say, I think that all of these messaging apps have their own place in different regions. I know some of my friends have LINE, WhatsApp, Kakao Chat, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger - AND, use them all. It's crazy. It's not just crazy, it's MADNESS. Any way, so let's take a look at some charts shall we?

As seen in the images above..

Google was the #1 Publisher in the iOS App Store, which is kind of funny - be cause Apple is #2. I guess you could say that Google's battle is an inward one, where they develop such great products that even within Apple's own app ecosystem they come out at #2.

On Google play however, it gets even more interesting. Facebook is the top publisher with only 5 apps compared to Google's 79! At 3rd, 4th, and 5th we have: WhatsApp, LINE, and Outfit7, respectively.

The Top Publishers by Monthly Revenue excluding games were:

  1. Pandora
  2. LINE
  3. Apple
  4. Microsoft
  5. and..Zoosk

Over at Google play we have:

  1. LINE
  2. GREE
  3. Kakao
  4. Pandora
  5. and ComiXology

When it comes to App Downloads on iOS, Google takes the top two spots with Google Maps, and YouTube.

Google Play downloads are again dominated by Facebook, WhatsApp, LINE< and skype, respectively.

As for monthly revenue on iOS:

  1. Pandora
  2. LINE
  3. Zoosk
  4. Comics
  5. and Skype

For Google Play:

  1. LINE
  2. GREE
  3. KakaoTalk
  4. Pandora
  5. and LINE

Now let's get into Games. I have been playing this one game recently called, "The Respawnables" - my god; that game has completely changed how I look at the mobile gaming industry. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty fun. But that's a story for a different day. Perhaps tomorrow I'll give a break-down of things they did right and wrong.

July was most definitely the year-err, *month of the snail. Three racing games including Turbo Racing League made it's way into the top 10 for the month of July. The other two being EA's Real Racing 3 and Doodle's Mobile Fast Racing 3D. Seeing as Asphalt 8 just came out about a week ago, it will be interesting to see if it can overtake any of these. If I were to bet money, I would say it takes the cake for all of them. Mainly because the Asphalt series has just gotten better, and better. Especially if you have a tablet to play the game on - super fun.

As summer comes to an end we look back and realize just how much children's game publishers capitalized on the break.

Let's jump into the numbers. Again, if you'd like a full look at the in-depth article you can find it here.
