iOS Updates of the Week

iOS Updates of the Week

We have a few topics to cover this week.   First,   When it comes to Piracy detection note these things down:  Don’t put piracy detection into your app, you have everything to lose and nothing to gain when it inevitably goes wrong. If you ignored lesson one then don’t make your app auto-tweet a confession from a potentially innocent user. If you ignore both of those lessons just apologize and be humble about it. To get a better idea of what I’m talking about and why I mention this you can read this full article. Great news for Mogenerator users this week. Jonathan ‘Wolf’ Rentzsch released an updated versionwhich has some new features and bug fixes.       Tools to make your life easier.   UIActivity Providers for iOS 6 Essentially A directory of all the iOS6 UI Activity providers in one place. Mobile Payments $1 Trillion Globally by 2017

Businesses and consumers will make more than $1 trillion in purchases (globally) by 2017, according to IDC a market research firm.   IDC predicts that the vast majority of these payments will come from mobile commerce, which includes things like making purchases through a company’s mobile website, apps, and more. NFC payments will account for a significant chunk as this technology comes to more smartphones and retailers upgrade to point-of-sale terminals (POS).   Aaron McPherson, IDC’s practice director of worldwide payment strategies said in a statement, “The growing prevalence of smartphones is enabling a variety of mobile payment methods, which combined are becoming a significant share of global commerce,”  “We expect growth rates to continue to accelerate as consumers and retailers become more comfortable with the technology.”   While $1 Trillion might sound like a lot, in this regard IDC points out that it’s only 2.5% of the TOTAL Global Payments that could potentially be processed through mobile devices by 2017.   Best,  ...

Apple picks up 1,024 former Nortel patents from Consortium

Apple, which led a coalition of tech companies ..that include: Microsoft, Sony, Ericsson and RIM (Rhythm in Motion) to outbid Google has recently acquired over 1,000 patents from Rockstar Bidco. At this time (back in August of 2011) Apple bought the Nortel patents, putting up just over half of the $4.5 billion winning bid.   This equates to a 58% stake in the consortium, which inldues 4,000 former Nortel patents now has 1,024 patents, 695 currently registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, while the rest are in the registration process. It’s unclear at this time as to how many of the patents are related to telecommunications, securing the rights will likely aid Apple as the company continues its legal battles with rivals outside the consortium.   At this time it’s also unknown whether Apple has paid any of the other coalition memers for the rights to “cherry-pick” some of the patents or if there have been an agreement to cross-license the patents it has taken. The Nortel patents...

Google Maps coming to an iPhone near you

Google Maps coming to an iPhone near you

As said today by a Google spokesman to the WSJ..   “We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system.”   According to inside sources, Google is distributing beta versions of an iOS 6 compatible Google Maps app. The WSJ claims that Google is putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it to the Apple iTunes store. An Apple spokesman said the company doesn’t comment on apps that haven’t been submitted for approval.   Since the day Apples Maps for iOS was released people have been complaining endlessly about how “bad and inaccurate” it is.  Personally, I haven’t really had much issues with it.  I have had some but not much.  But at the same time, that could be because of the fact that I’m based here in the Bay Area where if Apple doesn’t have their local geographics right then it is most certainly...

Google may be the new Wireless Provider in town.

Google may be the new Wireless Provider in town.

The search giant Google has already met with reps from Dish Network to partner on a wireless service that could potentially “rival” wireless carriers/networks like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.   In an interview this week, Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen said, “potential partners include companies ‘who would like to be in the industry’ and don’t offer wireless service.”   He did not name Google or any other of the companies. Despite the talk, there’s speculation that AT&T might partner with Dish on the spectrum offering.   Will update as more news comes in,  ...
