US Defense Department confirms plans to roll out 100,000+ iOS and Android Devices by next year

US Defense Department confirms plans to roll out 100,000+ iOS and Android Devices by next year

As discovered by 9to5mac, reports dated from back in October for  the U.S. Department of Defense indicate a preperation to approve a large number of iOS and Android devices for use on government networks.  Those reports were followed up with earlier this month with news that CACI International Inc was ‘modifying’ thousands of iPads for use in U.S. government agencies.  The Pentagon went on to further confirm plans to open its networks to 100,000 new devices from Apple and Google by this month next year.   The exact quote being, “The Pentagon said it wants employees to have the flexibility to use commercial products on classified and unclassified networks. It plans to create a military mobile applications store and hire a contractor to build a system that may eventually handle as many as 8 million devices.”   The move comes largely in part due to iPad’s and other iOS devices becoming more adopted by government agencies which formerly were filled by Blackberry,Linux, and others. The plans revealed in October...

Kindle Fire and iPad Mini Taking Off

Kindle Fire and iPad Mini Taking Off

A new report from ad platform Millennial Media has revealed that tablets alone accounted for a substantial amount of impression growth, with Android devices coming full fledged.  Of the Android devices, the Kindle Fire and Samsung tablets were the two dominant share holders with a combined total of 41% of the tablet market, compared to 58% for Apple.     When taking a look at the screenshot below it’s apparent that the Smartphone share of mobile devices also grew considerably from 68% to 75%.  Non-Phone connected devices (Tablets) also growing 5% and most unsurprisingly, Feature Phones regressing from 17% in 2011, down to 5% in 2012.   Millennial notes that Android continues to take up more places in the top 20 mobile phones list on its platform, while Apple continues to reign as the market leader with its own devices generating oustanding traffic from just the few core devices.  The iPad mini in particular, was among Apple’s strongest performers, growing its share of impressions at an average rate of...

Google Glass – One Thing You Probably Haven’t Heard Yet

Google Glass – One Thing You Probably Haven’t Heard Yet

With all the buzz that myself and the rest of the tech/mobile blogs out there have been creating for Google’s Project Glass as of late, there’s something that I stumbled upon that many of you may not have even thought about – yet.  Something that was actually spotted after an ‘extensive look’ of the device by The Verge.  It is said that,   “The device gets data through Wi-Fi on its own, or it can tether via Bluetooth to an Android device or iPhone and use its 3G or 4G data while out and about. There’s no cellular radio in Glass, but it does have a GPS chip.”   While it’s unclear what this type of compatibility will entail, it does infer that Glass will be able to use iPhone’s data connection.  It was previously acknowledged that Google Glass will be able to send text messages, however whether it will work with an iPhone in this manner has not been determined.   As an UPDATE to my article I...

Google Patent reveals Alternative Style to Google Glass

Google Patent reveals Alternative Style to Google Glass

These could very well be the limited edition Warby Parker frames that has surfaced a little around the net.  But in any case,  the US Patent and Trademark Office has published a Google patent application that appears to describe many of the technologies used in the company’s Google Glass Project (that is all the rage right now).  Spotted by TechCrunch earlier today, the filing lists several other embodiments that take a different approach than the Google Glass hardware that so far has been shown to the public.   Particularly describing  a “laser or LED source” and a scanning system to “draw a raster display directly onto the retina.  Some of the descriptions focus on comfort, balancing the weight between the nose pads and the temples, and providing a way for the transparent display to be moved to different positions. While other details provide insight into the on-board computing system and a touchpad for input. If you ask me, if we look at history and how companies like instagram have...

China Passes U.S. As World’s Top Smart Device Market

China Passes U.S. As World’s Top Smart Device Market

Well, that certainly didn’t take long.  I thought I just wrote an Article a couple month ago talking about this type of thing.  Probably did.  Not sure where it is.  Let’s continue. Just days into the Chinese New Year’s (Year of the Snake) China has officially passed the U.S. to become the world’s top country for active Android and iOS Smartphones & Tablets. This historic milestone has taken place within only 12months of Flurry reporting China as the the world’s fastest growing smart device market.   In Flurry’s report they have used their entire data set of 2.4 billion anonymous, aggregated applications sessions per day across 275,000 applications around the world. They estimate measuring activity acros 90% of the world’s smart devices. As seen the in the chart above, the tipping point didn’t actually occur until the end of January but nonetheless China’s growth curve is consistent whereas the same cannot be said about the U.S.  Flurry estimates that by the end of this month (February) 2013 – China...

Apple Dominating Mobile Video Viewing with 60% Occuring on iOS vs 32% on Android

Apple Dominating Mobile Video Viewing with 60% Occuring on iOS vs 32% on Android

A new study from video monetization company FreeWheel has revealed that the mobile video market grew 10% Year-over-year from 2011 to 2012, starting at just 2%. Of that, Apple’s iOS grew its share in total mobile video up to 60% while android is just over 1/2 of that with 32%. While both platforms experienced considerable gains in overall video viewing volume 30% of online videos on non-PC/Mac devices occured between Q3 and Q4 of 2012 alone. Needless to say, Apple’s strong lead is attributed to its dominance in the tablet market where FreeWheel says,   “Android has yet to field a competitor that can truly make a devnt in the overall share.”   The iPad accounting for 24% alone, while the iPhone had 30% and iPod touch accounting for the remaining 6%. With the biggest difference being in Q4 its easy to imagine that the iPhone 5, new iPad mini, and new iPad could have been a result of the new spikes in traffic. With the Kindle Fire being...

Androids new top device – Samsung Dominating

Androids new top device – Samsung Dominating

Among the Samsung family, and within the Android ecosystem, the Samsung Galaxy S II has officially been replaced by The Samsung Galaxy S III.  Having taken the spot form its older brother back in January, the top 10 Android devices can be seen in the graph below.   Surprisingly, the only two to manage to crack Samsungs stranglehold in the top 10 are the Amazon Kindle Fire and Motorola’s Droid RAZR. Samsung however during the month of January made up 47% of Android devices worldwide. This is nothing new, but Samsung also accounted for 47% of Android devices in December, 2012, and 48% in November. An interesting observation is that despite Samsung’s overall Android dominance, Samsung does not hold the number one spot for Android tablets; that honor goes to the Amazon Kindle Fire, which accounts for 37% of all Android tablets (mainly in the US). After December’s huge growth in Android tablets, the Fire’s successes may show why Samsung’s share of total Android devices is holding rather than...
