The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

Mobile Analytics firm App Annie revealed some insightful stats yesterday evening.  The report touches on the rise of Google Play, as well as how the US and Japanese marketers differ in top ranking apps and the like.  If you’re one who doesn’t like to read things that doesn’t have pictures, then fear not – this will have plenty.   To start off, December 2012 proved to produce record breaking revenue for the iOS App Store while Google Play revenue has doubled (and continues to double) quarter-over-quarter.  Even though Google Play had a higher growth rate, the iOS App Store gained more overall revenue. This gain was driven in large part by  record numbers in December where revenue from November increased by 35%     Historically December has always proven to be the most pofitable year all around with as many Holidays as there are.  In ‘Power Week‘ alone 1.2 Billion Apps were downloaded, with over 17.4 million device activations. With new iPhones and iPads (including the recently launched iPad...

Kindle Fire Drives US Android Tablet Market.

Kindle Fire Drives US Android Tablet Market.

Really? Really. The Kindle FIre of all tablets is leading the way in the US. With 59% of all android tablets seen by apps with Localytics integrated are based in the US, and over half of those are Kindle Fires or Kindle Fire HD’s.  Interestingly, outside of the United States, the Kindle Fire is practically non-existent. 89% of Amazon’s family of tablets live in America. A notable remark regarding the remarkable success of the Kindle Fire by Daniel Ruby over at Localytics, “…any Android developer with a focus on tablets should be distributing their apps in the Amazon App Store. The degree to which Amazon has dominated their most serious geographical market should speak to the future potential, and since Google Play is unavailable on the Kindle Fire family, adding Amazon’s App Store as a distribution channel is...

iPhone captures 51.2% of US Smartphone market – Android Users up 10%

After reading  earlier today about how Apple’s iPhone accounted for 6.2 million of Verizon’s 9.8 million (63%) activation’s it was discovered that only 651,000 were the iPhone 5.  This may be due to the fact that the device was only sold for 1 week in the quarter.   Overall, new data released by Kantar Worldpanel revealed that iOS stands at 51.2% vs 44.2% Android.  Kantar also noted,   “…36% of iOS sales were derived from other smartphone users over the last year. While this figure remains stable over time, the proportion of Android users moving towards the Apple brand increases. 19% of iOS sales over the last year were derived from Android users, compared to 9% in 2011,”   The majority of these ‘switchers’ are said to have come from Verizon.  With 49% of new iPhone sales from previous users of other OS’s,  30% came from Android.  AT&T continues to lead as top carrier with 33.3% of smartphones sold in the 12 week period, while Verizon sits at a close...

Google Glass Coming to Developers this Month

Google announced plans yesterday (Tuesday) to hold a “Glass Foundry” in San Francisco and New York in the coming weeks which will be two full days of hacking to allow developers to get an early look at the Glass and start developing for the platform.   The first day will more so be an intro to the features Project Glass has and is capable of; while the 2nd will delve into the Mirror API which evidently “gives you the ability to exchange data and interact with the user over REST”.  Google engineers will be on site for assistance to any developers who need it.   Developers who were in attendance of Google’s IO conference last year were able to order the ‘Explorer Editions’ of the glasses for $1500.  Those glasses are expected to ship to developers early this year, however, the exact date is still undetermined.   Glass Foundry will be held in San Francisco from Jan 28th-29th and in New York from Feb. 1 to 2. Developers who...
