iOS App Store Revenue 2.6x More than Google Play

iOS App Store Revenue 2.6x More than Google Play

App Annie is out with its latest quarterly index for iOS VS Google Play revenue and downloads. With the unstoppable growth of the App Economy the U.S. still leads for iOS App Store revenue growth, while Japan and South Korea take it home for Google Play.  Last quarter alone Google Play reached close to 90% of the iOS App Store downloads, although the iOS App Store maintained the lead in monetization, earning about 2.6x the app revenue of Google Play. This is however less than it was in Q4 of 2012 which was at roughly 4x overall.   Between the two App Stores, several countries made their mark for driving growth from Q4 2012-Q1 2013: United States was responsible for the majority of the growth in iOS revenues. China also proved to be a strong revenue contributor and also led the growth in iOS downloads. Russia proved to be a key factor in Google Play downloads growth. Japan and South Korea continued to drive sizeable revenue growth for Google...

New Apple Patent for LockScreen Features

New Apple Patent for LockScreen Features

Apple, like most big tech companies (Samsung, Google, LG, Panasonic, etc..) file a lot of patents for inventions that will likely never come into fruition. Today is no different, Apple has published documents to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office discovered by PatentlyApple, see image below. One of the more noteworthy features is the newly animated lock-screen which would allow quicker access to frequently used apps via new animated feature accessible through a home button that could also recognize pressure input. Sure some might argue that this isn’t something Android hasn’t already had for years, but can you imagine it being on an iOS? It’s about time if you ask me.  These new features will surely help iOS users bypass having to input their security pins just to ‘access’ the things that they should (in theory) already have access to from the get-go. In addition, apple filed another application in Q3 of 2011 which shows Apple experimenting with the possibility of having hybrid/notebook tablet designs (nothing Windows hasn’t...

Apple Increases Gap as Leading Smartphone Vendor in US, iOS Takes Share from Android

Apple Increases Gap as Leading Smartphone Vendor in US, iOS Takes Share from Android

comScore has released their February monthly report that ranks the top smartphone OEMS (Original Electronic Manufacturer’s  and platforms for the 3 month period ending in February. As seen in the image below, Apple’s distribution increased by near 4% (3.9%) while Samsungs only increased by 1%.  HTC,Motorola, and LG all showed declining shares between 1.7% and .2%.   One thing to note is: “the shipped vs. sold dispute doesn’t apply to comScore’s results, as its data comes from surveys tracking smartphone subscribers and usage and not sales or units shipped.”   While Apple may lead in OEM, Google still reigns over all with the top OS.  Despite the fact that it decreased from 53.7% (in November) to 51.7% in February, it still is quite a chunk higher than iOS at 38.9%.  Sadly, Blackberry, Microsoft, and Symbian only represent 9.1% of the remaining market (cumulatively).  With Blackberry at 5.4% share, Microsoft at 3.2%, and sad Symbian at 0.5%. ...

Apple Releases Stats for its Share in ‘Job Creation’ and $8 Billion Paid Out to Developers

It’s always nice to see how things like the mobile, and app industry is affecting every-day lives. People who may otherwise have no place to go. Today we’re going to take a look at a company that has clearly got their sh@t together, and is clearly helping others achieve the same. While there are a lot of stats included in Apple’s report, we’re going to emphasize the ones pertaining to the App Ecosystem. As written on Apple’s website, “Based on a study by Analysis Group in February 2012, Apple has directly or indirectly created 307,250 U.S. jobs.* These jobs — spread across all 50 states — include thousands of jobs in numerous industries, from the people who create components for our products to the people who build the planes and trucks that carry them to our customers. For example, this figure also includes workers in Texas who manufacture processors for iOS products, Corning employees in Kentucky and New York who create the majority of the glass for iPhone, and...

iPhone 5S Coming Soon? WSJ Thinks So

iPhone 5S Coming Soon? WSJ Thinks So

According to news from the Wall Street Journal earlier today, Apple is to begin production on its next generation iPhone during Q2 (this quarter) of 2013.  The update reiterates past claims of Apple’s next flagship smartphone having a design similar to the iPhone 5.  If this ‘iPhone 5S’ is actually to begin production this quarter then that means we could see a release this summer, perhaps as early as August.   From the WSJ, “Apple Inc. AAPL +1.09% plans to begin production of a new iPhone similar in size and shape to its current one in the second quarter of the year, according to people familiar with the device’s production, teeing up a possible summer launch for the next version of its flagship device.” The WSJ also reiterated its previous claims that a cheaper iPhone is, “in the works for this year”.  Which, if true – could be on track to launch in the second half of this year.  If that is the case, it is likely the ‘cheaper’ iPhone will have similar...

Apple to Reject Apps That Access UDIDS Starting in May

Apple to Reject Apps That Access UDIDS Starting in May

It’s been 18 months since Apple’s first mention of deprecating the Unique Device Identifier, and now the company is said to finally begin rejecting apps that make use of UDIDs. Apple published the statement in their developer portal revealing that, starting May 1st, the App Store will: “no longer accept new apps or app updates that access UDIDs.” In lieue of this, Apple suggests that developers update their apps to make use of the vendor or advertising identifiers introduced in iOS 6. Needless to say, this announcement has been a long time coming. Apple has reportedly been rejecting apps based on the particulars of their UDID use since March 2012. But wait, there’s more..the end of the UDID isn’t the only update to App Store policy mentioned on Apple’s developer portal. The company’s latest developer briefing also states that all apps and updates submitted from 1 May must support Retina resolutions and the iPhone 5’s four-inch display. But in all honesty, all developers should have already known that seeing...

Apple Patents iPhone Drop Protection Mechanisms

Apple Patents iPhone Drop Protection Mechanisms

It seems as these jokesters have nothing better to do with their money.  Yesterday Twitter Patented themselves, now a new Apple Patent that was filed today describes a variety of methods to protect a dropped iPhone during a fall, decreasing the damage through a number of systems. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filing was spotted earlier today by AppleInsider,  and includes a rotational mechanism to change the orientation of a falling iPhone, which would force a clamp down on inserted cables when a fall is detected. The patent delves into a number of ways Apple might be able to make a device that can change direction mid-flight, which would allow it to put its most impact-resistant surface forward to meet the ground. This could include an internal gadget for shifting mass to one end of the iPhone, an actual “thrust mechanism” that could even include a “gas canister,”  (I know sounds far-fetched right?) as an air foil that activates in free fall.   I wouldn’t expect to see...
