Google Now for iOS Could Very Well Be the Death of Siri

Google Now for iOS Could Very Well Be the Death of Siri

“Siri, schedule an appointment with John for next Wednesday at 1pm.” “I’m sorry I don’t understand what you mean.” “Siri, put on my calendar  – lunch with John at 1pm on Wednesday” “What would you like me to put on your calendar?” “Lunch with John” “When would you like to have lunch with John?” “Wednesday” “Is that this wednesday?” “Yes” “I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you mean”   If you’re an iPhone user, you can probably relate to the above.  Being a wishful thinker, I was hoping that when I got my iPhone Siri would be able to be my very own ‘virtual assistant’.  Fact of the matter is, I spend more time correcting what this silly little robot interprets than it would take me to insert the said task myself.  Quite a shame – really. Luckily, there is hope.  Google Now has officially launched on iOS for iPhone and iPad.  Take a look at the video below, and tell me that doesn’t look sexy.  If you ask...

Analysts Reactions to How Galaxy S4 Will Affect Apple

Analysts Reactions to How Galaxy S4 Will Affect Apple

Now that things have died down a bit, in-case you haven’t already heard, Samsung officially unveiled its new flagship Glaxy S4 smartphone last night with their ‘theatrical broadway-style’ presentation in New York. Today, analysts are quick to jump in with their opinions of what this means for apple.  Closing at $443.63 today, there stock doesn’t appear to have taken much of a hit.  Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray’s is one who is not the least bit immpressed with the S4 upgrade, but did note Samsung’s new ‘S Band’ as being “a quick first pass for Samsung on wearable technology ahead of Apple’s watch”.  Also adding that he expects Apple to launch a Smart Watch (iWatch) by 2014,   “The Galaxy S4 appears to be largely an incremental update to the S3 including a slightly larger screen (4% larger on diagonal), better camera and processor, and updated software, but largely the same body style and casing. We believe some of the software features are unique, including the tilt to scroll,...

New Apple Patent Could Finally Bring Wireless Charging to Tablets

New Apple Patent Could Finally Bring Wireless Charging to Tablets

A newly published patent reveals Apple’s designs for a Smart Cover that could use inductive charging to wirelessly power its iPad(s). The protective cover described in the patent would be able to, “wirelessly pass power to a corresponding inductive power receiver unit disposed within the tablet device” by coupling magnetic elements.   It was also mentioned that, “useful power can be supplied directly to a tablet device by way of a protective cover that can be placed in close proximity to a surface of the tablet device.”   To summarize, “In the described embodiments, the body portion includes an inductive power transmitter arranged to wirelessly pass power to a corresponding inductive power receiver unit disposed within the tablet device by inductively coupling, at least a first magnetic element, and at least a second magnetic element used to secure the body portion to the display in a closed...

Android Tablets to surpass iPad’s by end of 2013

Android Tablets to surpass iPad’s by end of 2013

According to IDC’s latest finding, “smaller, cheaper tablets”  will push sales beyond initial estimates, and also result in Android devices surpassing iPad sales. The firm predicts 191 million tablets will be shipped to market this year, up from previous estimates of 172.4 million.  What’s most interesting is IDC’s view of how Android devices will come out on top of Apple against the market leading iPad.   Research analyst Jitesh Ubrani went on to support their initial claims by saying, “One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size,” “And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond. “Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realize that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits.”   In the end, IDC projects that Android will reach 49% this year, while iOS falls from 51%, to 46%.  For the rest of the market – Microsoft’s Windows 8 currently...

Apple to take 65% of $25 Billion Global App Revenue in 2013

Apple to take 65% of $25 Billion Global App Revenue in 2013

New data from ABI Research says the global app economy will reach $25 Billion this year.  Of that, 35%, or $8.8 billion will be from Tablet apps, and 65%, or $16.4 billion will be from smartphones.  Together, Apple is looking at a 65% share.  ABI says that the overall trend has tablet app monetization outpacing smartphone apps, and expects by 2018 tablet apps will surpass smartphone app revenue – at which point, total global revenue will reach $92 billion.   According to analyst Aapo Markkanen, “The larger screen makes apps and content look and feel better, so there are more lucrative opportunities,” “One might think that the bigger installed base of smartphones would compensate for the disparity, but that notion fails to take into account the arrival of low-cost tablets, which hasn’t even started yet [in] earnest. The smartphones paved the way for them, but in the end we believe that it’s the tablets that will prove the more transformative device segment of the two.”   With that said,...

Apple Making Their Own Social Network? New Patent Indicates the Possibility.

Apple Making Their Own Social Network? New Patent Indicates the Possibility.

A new patent granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today has given Apple the right of use to a social networking system that institutes a number of data-base level features to ensure reliable friend states and how users interact with each other (says AppleInsider)   As far as what this patent will really mean for Apple customers (iDevice users) is still unclear.  According to AppleInsider, The  “Apparatus and method for efficiently managing data in a social networking service” should not be confused with a full-fledged social network, instead being a method of managing data within a so-called “friend service.”   Furthermore, “The main goal of any social network is connecting to other users. Apple’s invention notes that the initial relationship state between two users as “none,” meaning the two account holders have not yet interacted or sent friend requests to one another. In some embodiments, the “none” state is set as the default. A second “handshake” state is described when one of the users initiates contact, or...

January Smartphone Subscriber Share – Google Down, Apple Up

January Smartphone Subscriber Share – Google Down, Apple Up

ComScore’s January 2013 numbers arrived today showing that Google (and everyone else) is losing ground to Apple.  For the first time, Android (Google) dropped to 52.3% from 32.6% in October.   Apple meanwhile, is up to 37.8% from 34.3%.  Between the two, they make up more than 90% of the device share.  Upon deeper speculation it could be found as odd that because the top 3 U.S. carriers (AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint) report iPhone to make up anywhere from 66-85% of activations, it would seem Apple’s market share would be substantially...
