Starbucks Mobile Payments Now Account for 10% of Revenue

As if anyone (yet alone me) needs to stress the importance of having some type of mobile technology at the center of your company’s marketing mix – Mobile Commerce Daily has reported that Starbucks has experienced significant growth in the number of mobile payments received by customers.  So much so, that it accounted for 10% of the company’s revenues.  At present, Starbucks is seeing near 4 million mobile payments per week., up 50% from Q4 2012 and 25% from just last month (Q1 2013).   Mobiquity SVP of Mobile Insights Gene Signorini said, “Starbuck’s success shows that mpayments can be done right and successfully if you understand your customers well, you are committed to making it a success and continue to evolve over time to get the experience optimised for users,”  “For companies who are either just beginning to implement mobile payments, or haven’t started yet, Starbuck’s success is a good thing,”  Adding..  “Every new technology innovation requires a few leading edge companies to act as trailblazers, and Starbuck’s...

U.S. App Audience Now on Par with Laptops and Desktops

U.S. App Audience Now on Par with Laptops and Desktops

Flurry released a report yetserday that revealed “the numbers are close than you think”.  In the report, Flurry went into what it takes to reach comparably sized audiences across different media like television, print, online and mobile apps. They also drilled down on the size and engagement of the mobile app audience that varies across days of the week and hours of the day, as well as how it presents unique opportunities. To start.. Let’s look at the times that people use their devices the most.  The chart below illustrates that for 1) weekday and weekend smartphone activity is relatively close.  2) Peak usage times (for both) are between 6pm and 10:30pm at around 52million consumers. This is good to know if you’re a mobile marketer because it allows you to determine and decide whether or not you want the people you’re reaching out to to open it on their devices, or on their desktops/laptops.  Not that these figures account for EVERY single person, it doesn’t count for a...

Developing for Older Devices Yields Less Revenue

Developing for Older Devices Yields Less Revenue

Any indie developer out there who’s still developing apps for older devices needs to know something.  Since this topic has come up 2x TODAY alone, I thought I would write a piece on it.  Instead of trying to please everyone by making your app available on all devices, why not instead focus on creating a quality app for the devices that actually yield more revenue? A theory that’s been validated by NativeX recently is that:  The older the device, the less revenue the user has to dispose.     One might say that users with newer devices have more disposable income, and as mentioned above NativeX’s network had validated this theory showing 169% increase in Average Revenue Per Daily Active User (ARPDAU) from just iOS to iOS 5.  If that wasn’t enough to get you to reconsider, the folks over at Unity also stated on their blog: “the first iPad can be pretty much ignored now, whereas iPad 2 is still more popular than any of the later iPad...

PathMapp Goes Live

PathMapp Goes Live

Mobile A/B testing startup PathMapp that made their debut at Tech Crunch Disrupt earlier last year has officially went live today.   Pathmapp has essentially created a solution that allows developers to test different designs and push them out in realtime. Today, the startup is officially launching their  A/B testing platform for native iOS apps, with the goal of enabling mobile developers the ability to optimize their apps and increase conversions without sacraficing their users experience, or even making substantial workflow changes.   PathMapp CTO Andrew Herman said, “As mobile developers, we saw this massive gap in the market,”  “Similar technologies have existed on the web for years, but have been sorely lacking in the mobile space since the first iPhone debuted in 2007.”   Today, App developers can use Pathmapp to dynamically change the campaigns pushed to their users in realtime.   Additionally, Pathmapp has improved their analytics and statistics to offer “confidence measurement,” which crunches the numbers on user behavior and interaction, informing developers which designs are...

Decreasing Cognivite Overhead

Decreasing Cognivite Overhead

There was an interesting article published earlier today over at TC by David Lieb, who is the co-founder and CEO of Bump.  I’ll sum it up here for you, and if you feel so inclined you can go ahead and read the full version here.   Cognitive Overhead – What is it? Certainly, that would bea good place to start.  To reference what was said in the article by David Demaree: Cognitive Overhead — “how many logical connections or jumps your brain has to make in order to understand or contextualize the thing you’re looking at.”   While simplifying things generally is assumed as actions that: Minimize number of steps in a process Minimize time required Minimize # of features Minimize elements of each page Minimize the # of minimizations (jk ;)).   You may be thinking to youself, “Gee – is all this simplification really necessary?” “I mean, it makes sense to me.. so why wouldn’t it to anyone and everyone else?”   STOP RIGHT THERE.   Have...
