13.4 Billion App Downloads in Q1 of 2013

Canalys has released a new report that concludes the top 4 app stores delivered a total of 13.4 billion app downloads for Q1 of 2013. These downloads are across Apple’s App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store and BlackBerry World, which are also up 11% from Q4 2012. Developer revenue also grew 9% with app revenue reaching $2.2 billion in gross returns.   Adam Daum, Canalys Chief Analyst said, “Apps have had a huge impact on the way consumers use mobile devices, what they value, and what they expect from smart phones and tablets. All-time Revenues and Downloads of 250 Top Grossing Apps

Another update to the report Distimo  released a while back, which analyzes the all-time downloads and revenues of the top 250 grossing apps from February, 2013 – also showing the most lucrative models for app monetization. These apps have been published since January 2012. The main takeaways: In-app purchases generated a record setting 76% of all revenue in the Apple App Store for iPhone in the U.S. in February 2013 (up 53% from Jan, 2012). In the Asian markets (Hong Kong, Japan, China and South Korea), 90% or more of all revenue was generated by in-app purchases. Broken down by business model: 71% IAP Revenue from Free Apps, 24% from Paid and 5% IAP from Paid Apps. Of the top 10 apps for February, the average revenue per download(ARPD) ranges from $0.37-$7.04. Interestingly, of the 3 monetization models, freemium apps generated the least amount of revenue per download with an average of $0.93. Average U.S. User Spends 2 1/2+ Hours on Their Mobile – Flurry

Flurry (who does App Analytics) has  reported that the average U.S. mobile owner spends around 2 1/2 hours a day using their iOS/Android smartphones and tablets. That being said, 80% of time is spent on apps.  The report further indicates that 85% of consumers prefer mobile apps over mobile websites, and the data from Flurry suggests no different. Flurry found that 80% (of the 2hrs and 38mins) of the time is spent inside apps, with the mobile web being consumed for the remaining 20% or 31mins.   While games still reign the most popular with 32%, Facebook took 18%, and entertainment 8%.  As Flurry celebrates their 5th anniversary since launch  they’ve also released the data that its services have added to over 300,000 apps, with more than 1 billion sessions per month.   See the charts below for more info.   New App Usage on devices increased 20% while same app usage decreased 20%.
