The Harlem What?

The Harlem What?

By now.  Surely you’ve heard of The Harlem Shake from Bauer.  No?  Then you have to check it out here.  It’s pretty much like the next Gangnam Style.  What I find very interesting however is that, un-like Gangnam Style the # of viewer generated video responses is subsantially more. Substantially.  Since YouTube’s latest Trend Report 2 weeks ago there were over 4,000 Harlem Shake video responses being uploaded every-single-day.  The videos that had been uploaded had also accumulated over 175 million views with 40,000+ Harlem Shake Videos being uploaded in total.   Interestingly enough, this article is NOT about the Video. It’s about The App. The Harlem Shake App has exploded in Downloads (as seen in the image below). Another thing worth mentioning as courtesy to the folks who brought this to my Attention – App Annie, has recently added several new features to their Analytics Services which include:   Hourly Rankings Your apps’ rank in the top charts is one of the best leading indicators for downloads (and revenue). ...

Execution Labs Launches Lab Partners

Execution Labs Launches Lab Partners

In an effort to hep the little guys, Canadian incubator-accelerator Execution Labs has announced its Lab Partners program, which will help the indie developers it’s working with, and other indies, to find fellow studios they can run cross-promotion campaigns with. The free service is accessed via the Lab Partners section of the Execution Labs website and delivered through the self-service Direct Deals functionality offered by monetisation outfit Chartboost.   Execution Labs Co-Founder Keith Katz said, “The market has shifted in favour of large publishers who can afford to spend $1.50 or more to acquire new players,”   “We’re trying to level the playing field by providing a matchmaking service that allows indie developers to find other developers who want to strike direct cross-promotional deals.” Indie mobile game developers who wish to be a Lab Partner can check out the service...

Apple Proposing In-App Purchase Refund System for Parents

Apple Proposing In-App Purchase Refund System for Parents

The lawsuit – which could cost Apple up to $100 million to settle – is based around the claim that the company: “failed to adequately disclose that third-party game apps, largely available for free and rated as containing content suitable for children, contained the ability to make in-app purchases.” The proposal which could be approved in the US starting as early as tomorrow (March 1st,2013) will allow parents to claim at least $5 (either in the form of store credit or cash if they no longer have an iTunes account) IF they can prove the purchases were made without their decisions. ..I wonder how that conversation would play out with the children.   Ironically, while Apple is willing to refund at least $5 in the forms mentioned above, Apple will only entertain cases where the total amount of cash spent in play is at least $30.  Which in the case of some parents (5) in Caliornia who filed a lawsuit against the company in 2011 when their children spent huge sums...

Mobile World Congress 2013 Meet Firefox OS | Newest OS in the battle for 3rd place

Mobile World Congress 2013 Meet Firefox OS | Newest OS in the battle for 3rd place

Mee the new Firefox Mobile OS, HTML5-friendly brought to you by Mozilla. Certainly taking a big step forward in its mobile strategy earlier this week Firefox is clearly aiming to be a  THE 3rd player in the smartphone landscape currently dominated by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Mozilla announced that 18 carriers have now committed to its Open Web HTML5 device push; the launch of the Firefox Marketplace app store to aggregate content for the platform; and some of the first low-cost handsets coming out of its carrier partnerships that will be on their way this summer. The idea is that carriers may have a better opportunity in markets with lower overall smartphone penetration, and a customer base interested in low-cost handsets (versus premium devices like the iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy device). According to Matthew Key, CEO of Telefonica Digital, in a discussion with TechCrunch, “In Latin America, 82% of the population does not have a smartphone today, so we have the potential to make the market in...

Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds’ Cartoon to Debut March 16th

Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds’ Cartoon to Debut March 16th

Yes, it’s really happening.  And, I have to say, I really like the art direction that Rovio has implemented since the inception of Angry Birds.  The cartoon especially (as seen in the video above) brings back a bit of Nostalgia from the Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner days.  Over the past few months Rovio has teased the release of an ‘Angry Birds cartoon series’ but kept most of details on the down-low.  Until now, where evidently all will be revealed on march 16th when the first episode premieres.   Yesterday the company announced on their blog descriptions of “an all-new animated series that throws the doors to Piggy Island wide open.”  Needless to say, this is an expected move by Rovio who is looking to continue building off their major success Angry Birds with whatever franchises make sense to throw at it.  After the app hit it big, Rovio quickly moved into toys starting with plush Angry Birds. Then, just last Christmas, Rovio licensed the brand to Hasbro...

App Trailers moves beyond just “App Trailers”

App Trailers moves beyond just “App Trailers”

AppRedeem recently updated their AppTrailers app to allow users to watch TV show trailers to earn points (and eventually rewards) for watching.   The new “TV” Section on the app also allows you to set reminders in-case you wanted to watch a trailer prior to viewing the actual show on TV.  While it doesn’t appear TV Networks are paying to promote these trailers yet, CEO Sheffield Noal mentioned in a discussion with TechCrunch that the company is,  “in talks with a few networks to promote their TV shows,”.  In the meantime, the primary focus is to test engagement, which thus far – looks very promising.   AppTrailers as of writing has 8 million members bringing in revenue in the ‘high 7 digits’ and profits in the ‘low 7 digits’. Nolan also makes the strong case that AppTrailers is different from incentivized downloads.  Users are rewarded for watching the trailers, not the actual installs. You can download the AppTrailers App...
