Lumosity hits 35 Million Users and now growing at 100K users a day

When one thinks “mobile games” they usually immediately go in the direction of: Angry Birds, Temple Run, Clash of Clans, – what have you.  Games that are generally, not the most “mentally stimulating” in an educational sense.  Well today, I am happy to see that that Lumosity has hit 35 Million users and, as of January, has been adding 100K new users ever-day.  The company sit at the #1 spot in the education category of Apple’s App Sore for both Free and Top Grossing.  They also have a noteworthy 17 million MAU (monthly active users) in the US.   Having discovered Lumosity WAY back in the day, in 2007 before anyone even knew what an app was, I vividly remember being up late one night after having been burnt out on bother World of Warcraft and Counter Strike, I asked myself, “I wonder if there’s a game online that will make me smarter”.  Lumosity happened to be founded in 2007 and has since received $67 million in funding, including...

Hipmob aims to be the premier in-app customer service tool

Hipmob aims to be the premier in-app customer service tool

It seems like just a couple days ago I was at the Pulse talk on how they built their front end and back end news delivery service, where I met this lovely lady who told me about machine-learning customer service.  The idea at the time was pretty interesting as I know some companys have yet to even implement human driven customer service chat features on websites.   Sure the feature is quite common on the Web.  But how about for Apps?  Well, Hipmob is making an effort to become “the premier support service for mobile” Co-founder Ayo omojola noted that, there are plenty of tools like Olark and Zendesk for providing similar services on the web, but the mobile market remains underserved.  Sure it may be a little early, after-all, how many times do you actually want to talk with a CSR while you’re playing a game, or chatting with your friend via a social networking app? Probably not that much.  But according to Omojola, “a tool like hipmob...

The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

Mobile Analytics firm App Annie revealed some insightful stats yesterday evening.  The report touches on the rise of Google Play, as well as how the US and Japanese marketers differ in top ranking apps and the like.  If you’re one who doesn’t like to read things that doesn’t have pictures, then fear not – this will have plenty.   To start off, December 2012 proved to produce record breaking revenue for the iOS App Store while Google Play revenue has doubled (and continues to double) quarter-over-quarter.  Even though Google Play had a higher growth rate, the iOS App Store gained more overall revenue. This gain was driven in large part by  record numbers in December where revenue from November increased by 35%     Historically December has always proven to be the most pofitable year all around with as many Holidays as there are.  In ‘Power Week‘ alone 1.2 Billion Apps were downloaded, with over 17.4 million device activations. With new iPhones and iPads (including the recently launched iPad...

Applause aims to Make App Data Actionable

Applause aims to Make App Data Actionable

First things first.. There are mobile apps are everywhere, and from nearly every company. Apps have changed how users consume content, conduct commerce and connect with companies – anywhere, anytime. Sure there is a small percentage of apps that hit it big – delighting users, spreading virally, earning word-of-mouth buzz. But..most apps either disappoint users or flatline into obscurity. Companies need to know how users truly feel about their mobile apps, and how they stack up with their competition. But skimming a bunch of 3-star ratings and a never-ending list of app store reviews makes it tough to learn much of anything. Because of this, gathering explicit analytics of mobile apps have become a massive issue for app developers, business leaders, and tech leaders. Enter Applause  An app analytics product that crawls every rating and review from the top app stores. Applause synthesizes this mountain of user feedback into an easy-to-consume Applause Score  (similar to a Klout score) to measure user satisfaction, app quality and how much applause an app...

Kabam starts 2013 with more than $200M in Gross Revenue

Kabam starts 2013 with more than $200M in Gross Revenue

Having ended 2012 with gross revenue of $180 million, (revenue doesn’t account for the 30% platform cut that Apple, Google or Facebook take but is up 70% from last year). The mobile gaming company Kabam is boasting its expected revenues for the coming year. While Kabam hasn’t disclosed their marginal profits, they are a pioneer in midcore freemium gaming on Facebook. Unlike Zynga, they didn’t focus on reaching the largest audience possible or the stereotypical 35-year-old female casual gamer. Instead, focusing on a smaller player base (usually more male) that spent more on average to play. As Facebook became a more challenging environment, they transitioned to mobile as many other game developers did. That mobile transition, which includes extensions of their Kingdoms of Camelot franchise, is now a more-than $100 million business. The companies lastest valuation from back in May of 2011 was $500 million during a round of funding that raised $75 million for the company. It also said the recent strategic investment from Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and...
