India to Replace US as Second Largest Smartphone Market as Smartphone Web Traffic exceeds device ownership. Android App Revenues also to hit $6.8 Billion this year.

So yeah, that’s all kind of a mouth-ful. In any case, let me give you the low-down on what you need to know about what’s going on in the mobile industry. “Phablets” (Smartphones bigger than 5″ but small than 6.99″) currently account for more than 30% of India’s total market. International Data Corporation found that the # of phablets shipped grew 17-fold over just last year. Meanwhile devices grew 30% YOY. Comparing Q2 shipments from 2012 (3.5 million) to this years, (9.3 million) it’s more than evident that it has shot up more than 50%. IDC senior market analyst, Manasi Yadav, went on to say: “The growth in the Indian smartphone market is driven by consistent performance by local vendors who accounted for more than half of the total smartphone market in Q213.” IDC senior analyst, Kiranjeet Kaur, also added: “The key for growth in this market, as with most emerging markets, is a low-priced phone equipped with a large screen and dual SIM slots.” Currently Samsung and Nokia...

Optimizing Your App Marketing

Optimizing Your App Marketing

A couple days ago one of my more favorable author’s Chad Mureta did a guest post for App Annie. The topic was, “How to Optimize Your App Marketing”. Certainly, there are many perspectives on the subject but I think Chad does a pretty good job at describing all the things YOU SHOULD KNOW. With that being said, I thought I’d spare you the trouble of having to read the whole thing, and just give you the juicy parts. Enjoy. Things are and have been moving away from vanity metrics (like downloads) for some time. Developers are encouraged to TEST their marketing as much as possible as this will aid you (them) in getting the data they need as quickly as possible. App Revenue to Hit $75 Billion by 2017

App Revenue to Hit $75 Billion by 2017

Oh, in-app purchases. How they’ve certainly changed the game. It seems now a days if anything is going to make money, it’s going to be apps. And if it’s going to be apps, then it’s going to come from in-app purchases, or advertising. Certainly that wasn’t the case a few years ago when people still purchased premium apps (apps that cost money to download). According to Juniper Research, the result of this incredible growth is primarily attributed to the growth of apps & smartphones in many markets, but also the monetization models used by developers, and storefronts. Seeing as Blackberry is kind kind of out of the game now, Microsoft and Amazon are fighting hard for 3rd place in the App Economy while iOS and Google Play continue to dominate as 1st and 2nd. Author of the report Siân Rowlands, had this to say: “It is not only developers who are seeking to capitalize on their user base; many app stores are also implementing carrier billing to ensure that...

Apple’s Newest Guidelines Revision Clamp Down on Gambling and Strengthen for COPPA

Apple’s Newest Guidelines Revision Clamp Down on Gambling and Strengthen for COPPA

As reported earlier this week by 9to5, Apple has strengthened their App Review Guidelines mainly in regards to COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) and to clamp down on gambling apps that actually involve real money. One of the big considerations is that, COPPA prohibits apps from collecting personal data from children under 13 without ‘verifiable parental consent.’ In COPPA’s case, “personal data” is defined as: name, address, phone numbers, email address and present location. NOW however, it has been expanded to include: photos, video and audio. Additionally, apps that are aimed at children must contain a privacy policy, cannot tailor advertising to in-app activity nor may they contain links to content outside the app or allow children to make purchases without verified parental consent. Gambling apps, that involve real money must be free to download are not permitted to offer the option to purchase credits or in-app currency. What this means is that only licensed gambling operations can offer supporting...
