Read MoreThis article is a summation of insights derived from VB’s interview with CTO of Evernote Dave Engberg. Needless to say, Evernote is one of the most poular Mobile Apps in history, having made its way well across most iOS and Android devices, and even moving in on Blackberry and Windows. Below are 5 Tips from the CTO of one of the App Ecosystems most successful apps. Let’s do this. 1) Be Different. Not just think different, be different. This is especially true if you were thinking of making an evernote-like app. Engberg suggests, “99% of startups should be in a cloud environment,” Services like: Amazon Web Services, Windows Azure, and Rackspace Cloud can all help with just that. When thinking about how to spin off an original creation that’s not doomed as inviable from day one, you can take a glance at the market and ask “what can be done better?”. Remember, inefficiency = opportunity. With that in mind, there is plenty of opportunity in the App Ecosystem, BUT...
Read MoreMobile analytics company Flurry, who has been around for near 5 years and has more than 300,000 apps that log 3 billion app sessions per day has shared with us some interesting data through SourceDigital13. Particularly, data which reveals the engagement levels of US Consumers throughout the day. From a sample of over 15,000 US iOS users Flurry has measured the app usage throughout the month of May, 2013. The data depicts a 24-hour cycle to understand the usage throughout the day. Flurry concludes that the following insights can be derived from the chart above, such as: “App usage steadily increases over the course of the day and ultimately peaks in the evening (unlike TV which remains low then has a dramatic jump in the evening.) This is a big change of perspective for media planners who have been used to weighting their budgets toward evening TV. In an app-centric world, that spend could effectively be spread throughout the day given consumers are reaching for their devices consistently throughout...
Read MoreI have to admit. I’m a little disappointed with iOS 7. Now, whenever I look at my phone I’ll feel like a young teenage girl who should be rocking out to Katy Perry, Carlie Rae Jepson, or Taylor Swift. While the update at WWDC 2013 was certainly well received by the audience this year around, I have to ask myself – again, and again, “Will I still be able to walk around with this thing in hand and feel straight?” There is a big difference as to what teenage girls should be interested in, as to grown men. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, or haven’t seen things in their entirety, you may want to take a look at two things. The first of which, is Apple’s keynote on iOS 7. Then second, the image (thanks to pawsupforu) below – enjoy.Don’t get me wrong. I’m not hatin’ I’m just sayin’ I’m sure some people out there will find this to be the most fabulous operating system they’ve ever...
Read MorePreviously, the only way of doing this type of thing was through Apptopia. But now, for the first time since the app store launched in 2008, Apple is going to be providing an official means for app developers to sell their titles on to others. The new policy, that was pushed out earlier this week to registered developers described of a way to “allow the transfer of ownership of an app from one developer to another, with user reviews, ratings, leaderboards and updates all remaining intact.” The problem with the old way is that, it left existing users with an old version of the app and perhaps unbeknownst of the new release. This left many developers who were looking for an exit standing by their releases. These changes could indeed spark a new trend that has a number of apps change hands and, longterm, could very well change the nature of business throughout the App Store ecosystem. Imagine. Seeing acquisitions (solely within the app ecoystem) of up-and-coming apps like...
Read MoreFirst of all, I think this just goes to show that Apple clearly has no idea how to handle the MASSIVE amount of Apps that its platform is taking on every-single-day. I mean, with over 900,000 Apps on iOS – and $10 Billion paid out to developers to say it’s a “hot market” is grossly under-stated – but I digress. “Near Me” which replaces the former, “Genius”‘s spot front and center (see image below) will, (in my eyes) provide a tremendous opportunity for local small and medium sized businesses looking to promote their apps across a given local. Additionally, it could also provide considerable value for dealers, franchise businesses, large retailers, and chains that want to reach consumers in particular areas. When it comes to how “Near Me” will affect ASO (App Store Optimization), whether it will help or hinder – is still yet to be determined. I do however see this as an incredible opportunity for developers who understand the idea of ‘developing for local markets’. Undoubtedly, for...
