Google Acquires Waze for $1.3 Billion

Probably the biggest news this week with the exception of the unveiling of iOS7 from Apple. Waze, which was founded in 2007 has recently been quite a topic in the press as it had previously attracted other potential ‘buyers’ such as Apple, and Facebook. The company which has only raised $67 million in funding, has 110 employees with the majority of its staff in Israel and 10 or so in Palo Alto, including CEO Noam Bardin. Bardin revealed some of the motivations for going with Google in a Blog Post yesterday, specifically that of working with CEO Larry Page and Google GEO VP Brian McClendor: “We are excited about the prospect of working with the Google Maps team to enhance our search capabilities and to join them in their ongoing efforts to build the best map of the world,” adding, “nothing practical will change” after the acquisition, and that Waze “will maintain [its] community, brand, service and organization.” Needles to say, it will be interesting to see how Google...

Every once in a while there isn’t really much “good news” out there in terms of things I consider to be insightful.  I mean shoot, if we look at just the last couple days, this whole “Project PRISM” thing and the lay-offs from Zynga and other studios are dominating the headlines.  That, and I guess Apple’s WWDC that’s coming up rather soon. Gingerbread Leads as Most Popular OS on Android

Gingerbread Leads as Most Popular OS on Android

According to recent numbers from the Android Developer Dashboard, Gingerbread is still the most-used version of Android. The latest update which pulls data from the last two weeks, shows a total of 36.5% of users access the Google Play store through Android versions 2.3 to 2.3.7, beating both Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. Second place with 29% goes to Jelly Bean which continues to have issues getting devices on 4.2. And in third, Ice Cream Sandwich makes up just over a quarter of the OS Share at 25.6%.
