5 Tips to Prevent Your App From Being a Bust

5 Tips to Prevent Your App From Being a Bust

With 74% of last months apps in the App Store becoming ‘Zombie Apps’ (Apps that didn’t rank) it makes you think: how can these hundreds of thousands apps not even get off the ground? My answer: bad marketing. While quality of product is certainly an important part of any business, it’s NOT ALWAYS this way, do you remember how shitty Windows Vista was? (maybe not if you’ve been an iLover the whole time ;)) But..what did Microsoft do instead of fixing the KNOWN issues that their users were experiencing? Marketing baby – and lots of it. It didn’t matter after a while, because people just bought into the illusion that Windows Vista was ‘semi-good’ according to the marketing, and by the time their sales started declining they came out with the nicer, better, less f’ed up – Windows 7. So today we’re going to cover 5 things you can do to make sure your App isn’t a bust, like the OS I described above. 1) Make your App Remarkable....

Buying Your Way to The Top of the App Ecosystem – Got $96,000? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Buying Your Way to The Top of the App Ecosystem – Got $96,000? [INFOGRAPHIC]

After months of labor and restless nights you have to ask yourself (realistically), “What if I build it and they don’t come?” Well, that’s a good question to ask – because honestly, chances are that WILL be the case, (unless you bought my new book) or you have a PR campaign busting their asses on your behalf to ensure that your launch gets a decent amount of exposure. Nonetheless, to expect them to get your App in the top 10 would be a very hopeful thing. After all, now adays you would need at least 80,000 downloads in a 24hr time period according to the folks at TradeMob (a mobile app marketing company) who work with 80 different app discovery partners. After running the numbers from their data, TradeMob had concluded that 80,000 downloads will run you $96,000 in the U.S. for a non-game app — averaging $1.20 per install. Interestingly non-game apps have a 65% uplift, according to TradeMob; but when it comes to Games they get a...

3 Driving Forces to Rising Costs of Mobile Marketing

3 Driving Forces to Rising Costs of Mobile Marketing

Fiksu reported yesterday that after a steady couple of months things appear to be heating up for mobile marketers. It found its Cost Per Loyal user Index reach a $1.50 (increase of 10% or .14 cents) over March’s $1.36. The App Store Competitive Index also rose 11% to 5.61 million daily downloads from 5.02 million in March. After digging into the Data Fiksu was able to conlclude a few things, which are: “First, the relentless industry investment in mobile by brands large and small that kept competition high throughout the month. Second, the industry’s smooth transition from Apple’s UDID to its new Advertising Identifier (IDFA) actually kept traffic stable when it could have caused some disruption. And third, the increasing traction of Facebook mobile app install ads, which may have provided developers with a greater pool of efficient inventory and likely buffered the industry against even greater rises in costs.” Fiksu also had a thing or two to say about Apple’s transition to UDID’s.  You can read more on...

iPhone 5 remains Most Popular Smartphone in UK

iPhone 5 remains Most Popular Smartphone in UK

Take that Samsung! It wasn’t too long ago when I upgraded from my Galaxy S (yes the first one). My God.. Worst. Phone. Ever. Seriously. I digress, HOWEVER it is evident that OTHERS in the UK also favor Apple’s devices over Samsung. Not even the new Galaxy S4 is able to topple Apple’s flagship smartphone (at least in the UK). While they may have had a killer promotional campaign, Samsung has failed to win over users of Apple’s iPhone 5 in the UK, at least that’s what Mobile Magazine reports.  It was evident the iPhone 5 was the the UK’s most popular smartphone after uSwitch’s mobile tracker for May found that the Apple flagship device came out on top in terms of live searches, pre-orders and sales. Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, said, “While the Galaxy S4 has been an unmitigated success on a global scale, price drops and special offers barely a month after launch shows that the heavily-hyped device has needed a bit more oomph to make...

Windows Phone Market Share Doubles in 12 Months – really.

Windows Phone Market Share Doubles in 12 Months – really.

Wouldn’t have seen that one coming. Especially not in the US. Which is why this is referring to Smartphone users in the UK. At this time last year Windows had 4.0% market share, and now has 8.4% according to a new report by Mobile Magazine. The study also revealed that Apple is responding to Android’s continued growth in the entry level smartphone markets, with their own competitive pricing of handsets making the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 among the UK’s six bestselling devices. Unfortunately (in Apples case) this did not prevent the YOY market share decrease by 5.3% to 28.7%. Android nonetheless maintained the lead in the UK, with 56.9% of the market (up 13.6% from last year). Sadly for BlackBerry, its market share plummeted 58.8% over the last 12 months, despite the highly anticipated launch of BlackBerry 10 earlier this year. Global Consumer Insight Director at Kantar Worldpanel, Dominic Sunnebo said: “Android and iOS continue to take the lion’s share of smartphone sales in Britain. However, Windows phones...

Consumer Behaviors Mobile vs Desktop

Consumer Behaviors Mobile vs Desktop

The year is 2013, AND You STILL haven’t implemented a Mobile Strategy for your brand? Consider this for a moment: mobile phones will surpass desktops as the most commonly used device to access the web (this year). It’s also worth knowing that 57% of consumers will not recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site.  With that being said, there’s also a pretty big difference in consumer behavior on mobile vs. desktop and its critical to keep the simple stuff in mind (some of which we’ll cover in just a moment). So, let’s go ahead and get into this sucker as there’s kind of a lot to cover. 4 Primary Differences of Mobile vs Desktop 1) Shopping Habits Needless to say, Mobile commerce (mCommerece) is on the rise and shopping on mobile phones is going nowhere but up. In 2012, total sales of physical retail goods and services from smartphones was $8 billion (in the US) and this number is expected to grow 4x the size in less...

More than 3/4 Mobile and Tablet Video Ad Views Were on an Apple Device in Q1

More than 3/4 Mobile and Tablet Video Ad Views Were on an Apple Device in Q1

At least that’s what the analysts over at Freewheel said earlier this week. While Android may still have the lead on OS in terms of US and Global smartphone market share, more mobile video ad views took place on an iPhone 31.4% vs Androids 22.5% in Q1. According to FreeWheel’s latest report. iPad in particular accounted for 39.2% of video views with an emphasis on long-form content. In fact, 58% of ad views on the iPad were served as long-form content (over 20 minutes) for the quarter, compared to just 27% on the iPhone and 24% on Android phones. Researchers notes: “this reflects TV-style viewing habits on iPad versus on-the-go usage for mobile phones.” All-in-all, non-desktop video viewing (either through mobiles, tablets, or OTT devices) represented 19% of video views in Q1, which equates to a 50% jump from 12% just last...
