Size Does Matter – 4.5 Inches Most Preferred Size

Size Does Matter – 4.5 Inches Most Preferred Size

Ok, first of all – get your mind out of the gutter. This is a Mobile Blog and what I’m referring to is smartphone screensize.  A new study from Strategy Analytics revealed that in latter part of 2012 smartphone owners were more likely to be interested in devices with a screen size measuring between 4.2 & 4.7 inches. Within that range, 4.5-inches proved to be the most popular which is an increase from 4.3-inches the year prior.  I guess you could say people are craving “bigger things”.  When comparing existing smartphone users and gender preference, new users were more interested in smaller screens than exisiting and men prefered size over females. Paul Brown, Director of UX Practice for Strategy Analytics had this to say: “As consumer acceptance of smartphone sizes increases, many smartphone manufacturers are making larger and larger products. The intention of many manufacturers to drive screen size up has been very clear over recent months, and there is the potential for ‘phablets’ at the lower end of...

Drivers Expect Apple and Google to Improve Car Safety [INFOGRAPHIC]

Seriously.  I am a bit surprised myself at this one, but according to car safety review site CarSafetyRules.com who surveyed 1,000 UK drivers – found that consumers have more faith in tech firms like Apple and Google than car brands like Volvo or Mercedes to improve vehicular protection. 47.2% said smartphones have made drivers more distracted. 35.4% assume pedestrians don’t pay as much attention. 21% named Apple as the brand most likely to develop technologies to improve road safety, followed by Google at 19.8%,  Volvo at 19.7% When broken down by sex, Apple top the charts with 26% women, and 17% men who expect them to improve car safety.   Most respondents chose crash prevention braking and pre-crash alerts as the most attractive safety technologies, with apps that warn cars of dangers ranked fifth, followed by an auto-pilot system.   More in the infographic below.   What are YOUR THOUGHTS? 8 Promotional Strategies to Get You the Traffic You Want

8 Promotional Strategies to Get You the Traffic You Want

With nearly 800,000 apps in the iOS app store you can bet your last dollar that distinguishing yourself in the crowded marketplace will be no easy task.  In order to do so, you need to have a GREAT promotional strategy.  While there are certainly many different ways to promote your app, today we’re going to focus on the ones that, in my eyes – actually matter.   Let’s get into it..   1) Traditional Media (TV Advertising) One of the most obvious ways to drive traffic to your app is through traditional media.  Of the options that exist TV is likely your best option, however NOT THE BEST option.  Especially if you’re on a tight budget.  If you’re a large company like Amazon, or ESPN Sure – knock yourself out.  Amazon actually created a commercial specifically for their Shopping App which lets users scan barcodes and take pictures to find them on Amazon.  See below for their video, as well as ESPN’s who had a similar approach for their...

TestFlight Android Announces Open Beta for All Users

TestFlight Android Announces Open Beta for All Users

Today marks a very important day for TestFlight users everywhere.  TestFlight has officially launched the open beta of Android for all users.  After being asked on multiple occasions when this would happen, it’s finally here and should be exciting for all TestFlight users around.  Seeing as there aren’t many alternatives to what TestFlight provides on Android as CEO Ben Satterfield explained : “Our goal is not to be on every platform but to help developers better than other services on the platforms we do support,” he said. “Earlier this year we announced more than 300,000 apps uploaded on iOS alone. Given our base and the strong response to the private Android beta, we think developers will find it much easier to continue using our solution for managing beta-testing on both iOS and Android. “   Feedback thus far has indicated that users are happy with the services being made available to them.  Satterfield does note however that, the differences between how testing works on iOS vs. Android actually aren’t all that...

Line Reports Q1 Revenues for 2013 with $58.9 Million

Of those earnings, near 50% are from In-App purchases, 30% from stickers and 80% of revenue is from Japan (it’s largerest user base and where it first kicked off).  Recently passing 150 million users, LINE is revealing for the first time what % of its revenue comes from game in-app purchases vs its stickers.  Being a freemium app it leverages free social messaging and gaming services to draw in users, that will monetize its offering via entertaining add-ons that can be purchases within its apps. Breaking the revenues down by content type, game in-app purchases accounted near 50% of the Q1 revenues, while paid stickers earned around 1/3rd or 30%.  Additionally, Line has  mentioned that it now has 24 “seed games” (mini-games) that can be downloaded from within the main messaging app.  The company notes it will be reporting earnings regularly from now on, and even indicates to be adding new types of in-app entertainment focused content such as: shopping and music among...

Mobile Content Revenue to Surpass $40 Billion in 2013, $65 Billion by 2016

Mobile Content Revenue to Surpass $40 Billion in 2013, $65 Billion by 2016

According to new data from Juniper Research, Mobile Content Revenues are set to surpass $40 billion this year and $65 billion by 2016.  This will be primarily driven by operator billing and tablet owners’ unquenchable desire to purchase games, videos and eBooks. The firms stated that eBooks  will account for the largest revenue stream on tablets, noting Amazon, Nook and Kobo book store apps performing as well as versions on standalone eReaders. Needless to say, with the rise in adoption of paid and free video apps, music and video now account for almost half of all revenues. Gaming is set to continue leaning towards tablets and away from traditional handheld games devices like the Nintendo 3DS and the Sony PS Vita. Windsor Holden at Juniper Research went on to say:  “While the availability of direct carrier billing is patchy, the various benefits which the mechanism offers – higher conversion rates, opportunities to monetise unbanked customers – suggest that deployments will rise significantly in the medium...
