Parse Announces Parse Hosting

Parse Announces Parse Hosting

Parse may be a company you’ve never heard of, or it may be a company you’ve just recently heard of (likely because of its recent acquisition by Facebook).  With the acquisition having just happened less than 2 weeks ago the company shows no signs of slowing down with its product solutions.  The newest being: Parse Hosting. Parse is said to simplify the process of mobile app development by providing “mobile backend-as-a-service.” (MBAAS). Basically, the company handles the server side of things so developers can focus on the user experience and design. Additionally,  mobile developers that need a web presence can now host that content through Parse Hosting. CEO Ilya Sukhar said in an interview with VentureBeat, “Combined with our JavaScript SDK and Cloud Code, developers can now host their entire web presence on Parse and there is no need for a third party to host the static assets like HTML, JavaScript, or CSS,”    “We always dog-food our own platform and found it annoying that we had to use...

Android Device & OS Market Share for April 2013

Android Device & OS Market Share for April 2013

With tax season behind us we find ourselves taking a look at last months device market share data, and who the main players are. This data is based on NativeX’s daily active users from mobile games, broken down by device and operating system. NativeX provides this data so: “mobile game developers can stop guessing which Android devices to focus on.” It is apparent in the image above that Samsung continues to lead the way with its Galaxy S3 at 12% share, Galaxy S2 at 7%, and Galaxy Note 2 at 3%. Two not-so-usual suspects new on the charts in April however are the: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1″ and the LG Motion. While both the Galaxy Note 10.1″ and the LG Motion have been available for some time, they have slowly crept up the charts barely making the top ten last month. The LG Motion  in particular took over XIamo MI-One’s spot with100K DAUs.   Android OS Market Share Below are the breakdowns of the different Operating Systems (OS’s) on Android...

User Acquisition Best Tactics by AppsFlyer

User Acquisition Best Tactics by AppsFlyer

With so many different options for user acquisition some could find it daunting, other’s could find it confusing, and the rest.. well, may just not be that interested in doing the due diligence to see which is actually ‘the best’ approach.  Fortunately for us, AppsFlyer ha set out to get to the bottom of this issue through its analysis of billions of in-app events during Q1 of this year (2013). As seen in the image below, according to the figures – incentivized downloads (in purple) provide the highest conversion rate, but suffers in quality when it comes to long-term engagement.  Search (in yellow) provides high quality users, but low conversions, and low volume.   In this case, the diameter of each circle represents the volume each of the six types of user acquisition channel can provide. As is apparent, social discovery (in blue) is what AppsFlyer says works the best. Also adding that, since Facebook entered into the realm of app discovery, this channel has become pre-eminent. AppsFlyer notes...

Apple Expands on Developer Regulation 2.25

Apple Expands on Developer Regulation 2.25

So you’ve probably heard more than a few times by now about what happened with App Gratis, mainly – Apple removing their app from the App Store for being in violation of developer regulation 2.25, which states: “Apps that display Apps other than your own for purchase or promotion in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected.”   While no official announcement by Apple has been made, it can be assumed that apps are now liable to be rejected if they feature any type of: filtering, bookmarking, searching, or sharing of recommendations.  The folks over at PocketGamer.biz note being contacted by one developer whose app discovery tool has recently been blocked by Apple because it included such features.  That being said, it’s evident Apple has expanded on 2.25 to cover sharing via email or social networks. The ability to search the App Store using 3rd party apps also now appears to be restricted. The developer mentioned above had this to say:   “I...

Tablets to Outsell Laptops by 6 to 1 by 2017

Tablets to Outsell Laptops by 6 to 1 by 2017

For the first time ever, 2013 will be the year people buy more tablets than notebooks.  By 2017 we’ll buy 6x more tablets than laptops according to reports from NPD. NPD senior analyst Richard Shim also went on to say: “The mobile PC industry is undergoing significant change,”  “The rapid rise and establishment of white box tablet PCs … is putting pressure on traditional notebook PCs … resulting in cannibalization by tablet PCs.”   Also according to NPD’s latest report, tablet shipments will grow 67% to 265.5 million, in 2013 and to 579.4 million by 2017.  On the contrary, laptop sales are said to decline over the same period by 10% from 203.3 million to just 183.3 million. All that being said, there is still some hope for laptops.   Here are a couple reasons why.   First.. Tablet/laptop (touch-enabled) hybrid laptops will grow 48% in 2014, from practically nothing in 2012 to near 100 million in 2015, with signs of growth for the years thereafter. This will be primarily...
