Supercell overcomes EA to take #1 spot for Top Grossing Game and Company on iOS

Supercell overcomes EA to take #1 spot for Top Grossing Game and Company on iOS

A new report from Newzoo has been released revealing its market breakdown on the US and Northern European mobile sector. In December, EA was ahead of Supercell, thanks to the 9 games it then had in the top 200 (now 10), but last month – in January, the Finnish outfit Supercell bounced back gaining the top spot.   Clash of Clans remained the top grossing individual title in January, while King.com’s Candy Crush Saga crushed it at #2, Supercell’s Hay Day was in #3 which left The Simpsons: Tapped Out at #4 dropping down 2 spots from where it was in December.   When it comes to Google Play on the other hand, things aren’t quite the same – not even close.  With Korea and Japan being the two most valuable Android markets, it’s the Japanese and Korean companies who’re leading the way (as seen in the image below).   GungHo at #1, NAVER at #2, Mobage at #3, and GREE being all the way down at...

iOS 6.1 Security Flaw Grants Limited Access to Phone

iOS 6.1 Security Flaw Grants Limited Access to Phone

With Apple’s newest iOS Update and just a few quick steps, it’s not hard to open the phone app on any unlocked iPhone running iOS 6.1. After that, the person can pretty much do anything on your phone, as seen in the video below. As far as HOW someone came across this completely random set of commands to get this result, don’t ask me. The process involves holding down the power button and aborting an emergency call. This flaw causes the phone to load the phone app, giving anyone full access to the dialer, contact list, voicemails, call history, and (photos by editing a contact). Emails or Text messages can also be sent by sharing a contact, and Facetime is accessible through the contacts as well. App had this to say on the matter to TechCrunch, “Apple takes user security very seriously. We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.” While it’s not as easy as it looks in the video,...

Bumps latest update will have you saying “so long” to your USB Flash Drives

Bumps latest update will have you saying “so long” to your USB Flash Drives

For those of us who don’t use cloud services already, the ones probably walking around with a little thumb stick in their jean pockets..I have some great news. Really. Have you heard of the App Bump? No? Well you’re about to. In the apps latest update on iOS and Android it allows you to “bump” your phone with your computer to share any file from your phone to computer and vice-versa. I know, sounds awesome right? CEO and Co-Founder David Lieb described the added functionality saying, “we’ve kind of turned Bump into an unlimited and ubiquitous USB drive. So you can throw your USB drive away, as long as you have a phone with Bump on it.” Adding, “What we try to do is build products that ‘normal’ people can really engage with,” “So yeah, you can do all these things if you’re set up on some cloud-syncing solution, but what we find is that normal people don’t really know how to set all that stuff up…we want to...

Kleverbeast bringing easy app creation to the masses

Kleverbeast bringing easy app creation to the masses

Ok, so maybe they’re not as cool as the apps like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, Asphalt 7, and all those..but you can imagine the production and development costs on those aren’t cheap. By any means. Kleverbeast however, which was co-founded by Dinesh Moorjani has announced today the launch of their public beta to bring the quick and easy app creation to the masses. This will allow anyone to ‘create a beautiful, content-rich app in a matter of minutes.’ The service employs a drag and drop dashboard to help users figure out how to lay out their preferred media. Similar to how website creation has evolved, services like KleverBeast are disrupting the market place. Moorjani explains that it can cost anywhere between $20,000 on the low-end to six or seven figures on the high-end to get a team together to build an app. Kleverbeasts model starts at just $29 a month. You can update your app any time, and tes out the app on your actual mobile devices as you...

5 Ways to Make your App Stand Out

5 Ways to Make your App Stand Out

With the number of Apps on the Apple and Android App stores these days (1.5 Million+ cumulatively) it goes without saying that you need to put some work in to really ‘stand-out’ a midst your competition.  Discoverability, engagement, retention, and monetization are all areas that pose great challenges for even the best (well not the best) of App Marketers. Those who hone in on targeting and acquiring loyal users who take specific actions, such as: an in-app purchase, tweet, fb share, registration  etc… are the users who generally become repeat customers, brand advocates, and deliver on-going and the best ROI. The 5 Tips to follow will focus on how to get more of these ‘loyal users’. One important thing to note is that this information is based on 70 Billion+ user-based app actions including: launches, registrations, and in-app purchases from Fiksu’s platform.   So let’s get into it.  1) Set Goals for Loyal Users Now what defines a loyal use will vary from app-app so you’ll need to define what that means...

Nexon Behemoth Sees Revenues Climb 39% to $331.4 Million

Nexon Behemoth Sees Revenues Climb 39% to $331.4 Million

Q4 2012 Proved to be a good one for Nexon (the freemium gaming company that went public around the same time that Zynga did).  The company saw revenues jump 39% to 30.9 Billion Yen ($333.14 million). Despite this, they still posted a net loss of 94 Million Yen ($1 million) due to various writedown and high tax expenses in South Korea.  Emerging in Seoul almost 20 years ago, Nexon originally built their business in downloadabe PC games in China and South Korea with franchies like MapleStory (which I may have played some years ago) – and has cumulatively done more than $1 Billion in revenue.  After raising $1.2 Billion in a late 2011 IPO the company moved its Headquarters to Tokyo.  While the company’s stock hasn’t done nearly as Bad as Zynga (I dont’ think anyones have, maybe Facebook – no not really – they’re ok now :).  But, the road has not been an easy one for Nexon – with shares trading 29% lower than they did a...

1/4th of businesses to own an in-house app store by 2017

Yes, you did read that correctly. “App Store” not “App”.  Platforms to feature corporate content for mobiles and PCs.  With Entprises apps main goals being to: enhance company productivity, encourage brand loyalty and increase brand awareness – it’s no wonder the markets revenues are expected to reach $50m in the next 4 years.  New data from Gartner indicates that 25% of businesses will have their own in-house enterprise app store by 2017. Gartner says that,   “the portals will feature corporate approved apps for mobiles and PCs designed to enhance control over the apps that employees are using.”    Seriously? Ian Finley VP of research at Gartner went on to futher say,   “Apps downloaded from public app stores for mobile devices disrupt IT security, application and procurement strategies. Bring your own application (BYOA) has become as important as bring your own device (BYOD) in the development of a comprehensive mobile strategy, and the trend toward BYOA has begun to affect desktop and web applications as well.   “Enterprise...
