Apple to bring Manufacting back to US.

Apple to bring Manufacting back to US.

Ok, so maybe not entirely (as that would more than likely decrease marginal profits by an amount that shareholders would not be happy with..and with Apple’s stock where it’s at, that’s the last thing they need) … But, in tonight’s state of the union address, President Barack Obama mentioned that Apple has plans to bring back manufacturing to the U.S. starting with an existing Mac line this year. President Obama’s comments came in larger context about bring back jobs to the US. “After shedding jobs for more than 10 years, our manufacturers have added about 500,000 jobs over the past three. Caterpillar is bringing jobs back from Japan. Ford is bringing jobs back from Mexico. After locating plants in other countries like China, Intel is opening its most advanced plant right here at home. And this year, Apple will start making Macs in America again.” Cook also announced Apple’s plans to bring Mac manufacturing to the U.S. at some point in 2013 in interviews from late 2012. Additionally, reiterating the plans in an...

The REAL Cost of Poor Website Performance

The REAL Cost of Poor Website Performance

The year is  2013, believe it or not (yes we survived the Mayan apocalypse too – but more importantly..) some people still do not have a website.  CRAZY! Right? I think so. With many smart Small Businesses and Enterprises already making their websites accessible and optimized for mobile those analyzing the transition may be asking themselves,   “Why the heck haven’t these other busineses done the same, or at the very least kept up with the par in performance? I can only imagine how much money they’re losing..”   Well, today – thanks to the folks at Smartbear – we don’t have to imagine anymore (although it’s highly suggested that you still do, as studies have shown those who have creative imaginations are more likely to reduce the risk of cancer by 95% – not really.)   In any case, if you’re a small business, or just a service professional and your website hasn’t been updated since the birth of the internet, maybe it’s abou time. Here’s...

Androids new top device – Samsung Dominating

Androids new top device – Samsung Dominating

Among the Samsung family, and within the Android ecosystem, the Samsung Galaxy S II has officially been replaced by The Samsung Galaxy S III.  Having taken the spot form its older brother back in January, the top 10 Android devices can be seen in the graph below.   Surprisingly, the only two to manage to crack Samsungs stranglehold in the top 10 are the Amazon Kindle Fire and Motorola’s Droid RAZR. Samsung however during the month of January made up 47% of Android devices worldwide. This is nothing new, but Samsung also accounted for 47% of Android devices in December, 2012, and 48% in November. An interesting observation is that despite Samsung’s overall Android dominance, Samsung does not hold the number one spot for Android tablets; that honor goes to the Amazon Kindle Fire, which accounts for 37% of all Android tablets (mainly in the US). After December’s huge growth in Android tablets, the Fire’s successes may show why Samsung’s share of total Android devices is holding rather than...

52% of Women in UK to purchase Valentine’s Day gifts via Mobile this year

52% of Women in UK to purchase Valentine’s Day gifts via Mobile this year

This year, consumers are heading to their phones rather than shops to purchase their Valentines day gifts.  With Valentine’s Day just 4 days away, over half of female consumers in the UK are now looking to their phone to purchase gifts for their loved ones. A Mojiva report has found that 52% of British women would rather purchase Valentine’s Day gifts from their mobile than visit a retail location. More so,  53% of consumers now think more favourably about brands that make use of mobile advertising.  The report suggests that m-commerce is set to play a crucial role for retailers in 2013, with 66% of consumers claiming that they believe a mobile device will ease the process of buying Valentine’s gifts. As consumer confidence in m-commerce continues to grow,  50% of men and 35% of women claim that they would be happy to spend more than $40 on a gift via a mobile platform.  Lastly, consumer engagement with mobile ads is also on the rise, with the report finding...

When tracking your DAU’s just isn’t enough.

When tracking your DAU’s just isn’t enough.

In the mobile world, companies are defined by their vanity metrics. How many monthly active users do you have? What’s your retention like? How many downloads do you have? These kind of metrics, while certainly surface level are usually what guides the Silicon Valley Mindset of, “get users today, make money off them tomorrow”. It is seriously crazy. Companies will amass millions of users, but still have no revenue model on how they’re going to monetize those users, yet somehow have raised millions in funding.   Let’s take a deeper look.   In mobile, DAU’s (daily active users) is often the standard by which app developers are judged. While the industry has yet to define a concrete term for ‘DAU’ analytics companies like Flurry use a rolling average, where a user is considered active if they’ve opened the app at least once in the past 7 days. Another would consider a user active if they use the app on a particular day. In any case, to determine mobile success one would...

Not an Apple fan? Don’t like Google Play? Windows not enough? Fear not – Ubuntu is on the way this October.

Not an Apple fan? Don’t like Google Play? Windows not enough? Fear not – Ubuntu is on the way this October.

That’s right the Wall Street Journal has reported that the first new devices running Ubuntu’s mobile operating system will hit the market in October. Developers however, will gain access to the beta versions of the operating system as early as late this month, with a variant that is designed to run on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus device. CEO Mark Shuttleworth said the company will be targeting two geographically large markets at launch, while no other specifics were given, one might anticipate this would be US and UK.   The new Ubuntu mobile OS is capable of being connected to a monitor and wirelessly connected to a keyboard, where it will function like a desktop computer. In this configuration, it will also be able to support Windows applications remotely served over corporate networks. The UI is said to have a similar approach to Microsoft’s new Windows 8 interface (where actions are initiated by swiping in from each edge of the device’s screen). Users will be able to multitask, while not leaving the current...

AppStori to offer $1,000’s in rewards

AppStori to offer $1,000’s in rewards

Haven’t heard of AppStori? They’re a Crowdfunding platform for mobile applications. Think Kickstarter, Indiegogo – but an emphasis on mobile apps. AppStori has recently had some exciting news too – having announced new partnerships designed to reward developers with free services from Amazon Web Services and customer engagement platform Appboy. Developers accepted onto the AppStori platform will now be eligible for “literally thousands of dollars in cash and services” from AppStori’s partners upon successful completion of a project. MillenialMedia, as an example, already offers developers $500 cash and $500 of credit on its advertising network. More recently, AppStori developers will now be eligible for $1,000 credit towards Amazon Web Services and six months of enterprise level service from Appboy once their project goes live. Appstori said in a statement, “These new partnerships, along with our existing relationship with Millennial Media mean that developers who list on our platform will get literally, thousands of dollars in cash and services from some of the leading providers in the mobile space,” “On top of...
