New Patent filed by Apple reveals laser projected keyboard & depth perception system

New Patent filed by Apple reveals laser projected keyboard & depth perception system

The patent is described as a depth perception system and laser projection. PatentlyApple highlighted the story earlier yesterday with several possiblities of using cameras and a laser source to determine the distance of an object and implement various applications based on detection of depth. PatentlyApple also described how Apple could use the invention for laser projected keyboard applications (as pictured below):   “In this example, the iMac is able to detect a user approaching it and activate a particular program, application, awake from sleep or power save mode, and the like… In patent FIG. 12, we see a user positioned in front of this future iMac such that the first and second beams 206a, 206b may at least partially intersect the user. The iMac’s updated iSight Camera will be able to determine the distance that the user is from iMac. The depth perception system increases the sensitivity of user detection for the iMac so that it could make a distinction between the user and an occupied chair… In Apple’s patent...

Hipmob aims to be the premier in-app customer service tool

Hipmob aims to be the premier in-app customer service tool

It seems like just a couple days ago I was at the Pulse talk on how they built their front end and back end news delivery service, where I met this lovely lady who told me about machine-learning customer service.  The idea at the time was pretty interesting as I know some companys have yet to even implement human driven customer service chat features on websites.   Sure the feature is quite common on the Web.  But how about for Apps?  Well, Hipmob is making an effort to become “the premier support service for mobile” Co-founder Ayo omojola noted that, there are plenty of tools like Olark and Zendesk for providing similar services on the web, but the mobile market remains underserved.  Sure it may be a little early, after-all, how many times do you actually want to talk with a CSR while you’re playing a game, or chatting with your friend via a social networking app? Probably not that much.  But according to Omojola, “a tool like hipmob...

1.4 Billion Smartphones in Use by 2013 – ABI Research

1.4 Billion Smartphones in Use by 2013 – ABI Research

Certainly seems like quite a few doesn’t it?  Especially when you take into consideration last year (2012) was the year that Smartphones activations hit 1 billion (as well as Facebooks user base).  The firm predicts that of those 1.4 Billion smartphones there will be 268 Million tablets, 45 Million Windows Phones, 20 Million Blackberry 10’s, and that Android and iOS will continue to lead the way.   ABI Analyst Aapo Markkanen wrote,   “The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which then would effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success,”   “Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game.”   Also adding in an interview with TechCrunch:   “Based on our current shipment forecasts, we don’t see the installed base of either BB or WP reaching the double-digits within the next five years,”   “It’ll...

Apple getting into MicroLending? New Patent suggests that may be the case.

Apple getting into MicroLending? New Patent suggests that may be the case.

While it may seem a little far fetched, a new patent applicaiton published yesterday by the United States Patent and Trademark Office The patent outlines a system whereby a user would post requests for small amounts of cash using their iPhone, where other nearby users could respond to to provide some quick funds in the event that no other option is available. Historically Apple has stuck with either refinements or extensions of their existing technology.  This method however, would be an entirely new path for Apple, and it will be interesting to see how it might come to fruition.  The patent was originally filed in July, 2011 and published by the USPTO yesterday, and spotted by...

The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

The Rise of Google Play – App Annie January 2013 Index

Mobile Analytics firm App Annie revealed some insightful stats yesterday evening.  The report touches on the rise of Google Play, as well as how the US and Japanese marketers differ in top ranking apps and the like.  If you’re one who doesn’t like to read things that doesn’t have pictures, then fear not – this will have plenty.   To start off, December 2012 proved to produce record breaking revenue for the iOS App Store while Google Play revenue has doubled (and continues to double) quarter-over-quarter.  Even though Google Play had a higher growth rate, the iOS App Store gained more overall revenue. This gain was driven in large part by  record numbers in December where revenue from November increased by 35%     Historically December has always proven to be the most pofitable year all around with as many Holidays as there are.  In ‘Power Week‘ alone 1.2 Billion Apps were downloaded, with over 17.4 million device activations. With new iPhones and iPads (including the recently launched iPad...
