Kabam starts 2013 with more than $200M in Gross Revenue

Kabam starts 2013 with more than $200M in Gross Revenue

Having ended 2012 with gross revenue of $180 million, (revenue doesn’t account for the 30% platform cut that Apple, Google or Facebook take but is up 70% from last year). The mobile gaming company Kabam is boasting its expected revenues for the coming year. While Kabam hasn’t disclosed their marginal profits, they are a pioneer in midcore freemium gaming on Facebook. Unlike Zynga, they didn’t focus on reaching the largest audience possible or the stereotypical 35-year-old female casual gamer. Instead, focusing on a smaller player base (usually more male) that spent more on average to play. As Facebook became a more challenging environment, they transitioned to mobile as many other game developers did. That mobile transition, which includes extensions of their Kingdoms of Camelot franchise, is now a more-than $100 million business. The companies lastest valuation from back in May of 2011 was $500 million during a round of funding that raised $75 million for the company. It also said the recent strategic investment from Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and...

Watch out TestFlight – Kickfolio rolls out embedding feature

Watch out TestFlight – Kickfolio rolls out embedding feature

Having touched on Kickfolio in December the service got some major updates today; including the ability to embed app demos on any webpage using an iframe. These features while great for developers and users are also going to heat things up with competition like Testflight or PreApp.  It will be interesting to see how these 3 companies evolve and innovate as the industry progresses. If you go to their website and scroll down a little you’ll see these features and be able to test them. They also now support  iPad apps, and are making the service much more affordable for all. Needless to say, this is a powerful tool for developers promoting their apps online, and no reason people should’t take advantage of when providing free demos to potential users and have on their website. After receiving some feedback from their users regarding their plans that start at $50 a month Kickfolio has slashed the cheapest plan to $9 a month (which includes 500 embed sessions). Every plan now also includes...

Kindle Fire Drives US Android Tablet Market.

Kindle Fire Drives US Android Tablet Market.

Really? Really. The Kindle FIre of all tablets is leading the way in the US. With 59% of all android tablets seen by apps with Localytics integrated are based in the US, and over half of those are Kindle Fires or Kindle Fire HD’s.  Interestingly, outside of the United States, the Kindle Fire is practically non-existent. 89% of Amazon’s family of tablets live in America. A notable remark regarding the remarkable success of the Kindle Fire by Daniel Ruby over at Localytics, “…any Android developer with a focus on tablets should be distributing their apps in the Amazon App Store. The degree to which Amazon has dominated their most serious geographical market should speak to the future potential, and since Google Play is unavailable on the Kindle Fire family, adding Amazon’s App Store as a distribution channel is...

The Japanese Mobile Landscape according to App Annie

The Japanese Mobile Landscape according to App Annie

This is a summation of a report released earlier today by App Analytics firm App Annie.  For the first time in history of the app industry, the United States is not the leading revenue generating country on Google Play. As of last October is was surpassed by Japan. A country whose gone through tremendous change in their ‘app economy’ and looks to be continue growing as a global app powerhouse. Once dominated by feature phones, Japan’s mobile culture is shifting towards smartphones. At the end of 2011, only 23% of handsets being used in Japan were smartphones.  Today, Japan’s mobile environment is rapidly evolving. Industry experts believe that feature phones will be extinct in Japan in the next five years as consumers switch over to iPhones and Android smartphones. The iOS app store ecosystem is disrupting the Japanese mobile industry by removing the ability for carriers to control content which weakens their ability to influence phone manufacturers.  Since they cannot control the manufacture and sale of the iPhone, nor can they control the...

The Death of TurnTable.FM?

The Death of TurnTable.FM?

Things haven’t been looking good for the Social Music Discovery site that had an astounding 360,000 new users in their first 3 months.  They even peaked at  419,000+ MAU (Monthly Active Users) back in July of 2011.  Their valuation a that time was around $37 Million.   Now, Soundrop which had its minor debut around October last year announced this morning that it has launched ‘listening rooms on facebook’. Turntable.fm is essentially listening rooms not on facebook.  Much like TurnTable.fm..  “artists and fans will be able to create social music spaces where they can listen to music together, chat, and vote on what they want to hear next.”   So what’s the difference? Well, first of all.  Facebook has 1Billion+ users, and is the #2 most trafficked website in the world.  Vs TurnTable.fm which as shown in the image above..isn’t doing so well (27k+ Monthly visits).   A Soundrop ‘listenting room’ on Facebook is a page running the app, which streams music and video from YouTube or VEVO at...
