Read MoreWell at least that’s how many apps have been downloaded from the App Stores since 2008 (when the industry got started). 89% of them come from their native apps stores too. Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst, said: “The current status quo is based on storefronts that the operating system vendors provide as part of the OS experience, and there is no evidence that this would change in the future.” “A year ago it still looked like that, for example, mobile operators could find a viable business case in the curation of Android apps, but that opportunity evaporated once Google got its storefront act together. Today, it makes sense for operators to distribute apps only under special circumstances, such as the ones that we’re seeing in China. “Running a user-friendly app distribution channel is expensive. Besides the adequate hosting and billing systems it takes quite a lot of human labor, since successful app discovery requires some form of editorial approach. The opportunity for smaller storefronts built around selected...
Read MoreOohh. Now isn’t that just throwing gasoline on the fire that has incinerated Apple Maps over the last week. So here’s the scoop. Google has released a new SDK that will allow developers to utilize its service within their own apps. Mainly the SDK allows access to a URL scheme that lets you call up the app from anywhere you like within your own device. Earlier this evening, Senior Product Manager on Google Maps, Andrew Fost said, “The SDK features vector-based maps that load quickly, allowing users to easily navigate 2D and 3D views, rotating and tilting the map with simple gestures inside your app. Developers can also change the Google maps view to include information such as traffic conditions, and control camera positions in 3D. Access to API keys is being progressively rolled out to developers who register interest.” Documentation for the SDK as well as the URL scheme instructions, are now available on Google’s Dev site, so take a gander, check it out – and...
Read MoreAccording to the latest Appcelerator quarterly report.. Apple’s iPhone and iPad continue to lead the way for most desirable platforms for developers. Grabbing 89% (iPhone) and 86% (iPad) among a pool of over 2,700 respondents. Android Phones however trails by less than 10%, with 77% interest, Tablets however, a little bit more with only 64%. The good news is -most developers are looking into build cross-platform apps instead of targeting just one. 49% aiming for two platforms, and 31% going for 3 different operating systems. The big difference is in cross-platform interest, which sees 88.4% of mobile developers expressing intent to develop for two or more mobile platforms in 2013, vs. 68.9% from the the previous quarter. Other findings from the report are developers also expressing concern about Apple’s recent hardware introductions, with only 19% agreeing that Apple has done enough to manage the fragmentation issues introduced by introducing new screen sizes as with the iPhone 5. While the iPad mini retains the same resolution of the original iPad and iPad...
