25% of Developers account for 50% of App Revenue on Apple App Store and Google Play

Yeah – 25%  for 50% of App Revenue On Apple App Store and Google Play !   As if we didn’t already realize that the competition was fierce.  But,  who would have thought it was this fierce?   According to surveys by Canalys  these 25 developers accrued $60 million from paid-for downloads and in-app purchases over this period.   Needless to say, the majority of the top grossing apps are in-fact games, and of those – the majority are Freemiums.   Canalys noted:   During the same period, games accounted for 145 on average of the top 300 paid apps in the Apple App Store and 116 of Google Play’s top 300 paid apps. Games also accounted for 94 of the top 300 listed free apps for Apple and 110 for Google Play.   According to their analysis: Developers who are not making games have an upward battle in getting noticed, and monetizing their app. We all konw discoverability is a huge issue.     Canalys Senior Analyst Tim Shepherd...

5 Tips for Optimizing Your App Economy

5 Tips for Optimizing Your App Economy

5 tips for optimizing your app economy   1) Confused people do nothing. So don’t overwhelm your users.  Instead, you should display a small amount of virtual items (about 6) and give hints that more content can be “unlocked” after players achieve new levels. Why 6?  Take notes from online retailers, specifically Amazon, and how they display search results. There’s a reason Amazon only shows 4-7 search results on a screen (depending on resolution) without requiring you to scroll. Implementing  this concept to your game will prevent players from becoming overwhelmed and allow them to better interpret the items available.   Silhouette’s work as a great hints for players.   2) Make it easy   Whether you’re directing someone to opt-in to your mailing list ..buy one of your products or purchase upgrades..   You want it to make it painfully easy for them to do so.  My friend Jason once said the funniest thing I’ve ever heard, but at the same time it was a sad truth for...

The End of Social Gaming

The End of Social Gaming

The End of Social Gaming   It’s not too often I write an article that can completely and utterly dissuade and discourage you, or others from moving towards your goals in creating a mobile app, which may in fact be a game.   But after reading a very interesting article I felt I needed to write my own to get my thoughts out there.  It goes without saying that people have gone overboard with adoration for a slightly new genre of games that were really not all that new to begin with.   In reality, these “games” are just re-makes of other games that have had their time in the spotlight already (mostly on facebook, the web, and earlier game consoles), the difference is – now your friends are on the scoreboard (or game center). These games are all played out and there will be without a doubt a downswing unless something new is brought to the table, but I don’t see another Angry Birds or Farmville on the horizon for...
