Distimo Stats Q4 2013 and Top Grossing Apps of 2013

According to a new report from Distimo the Apple App Store continues to lead in revenue generation whereas Google Play maintains a steady growth rate. As we can see in the chart below, in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Russia, China, and Australia - iOS dominates in revenue distribution. When it comes to South Korea and Japan though, Google Play is the obvious winner.

Just to see how many apps were Free on each App Store, we have iOS with 92% yet Google Play at a 98%

Indeed there has been a major shift this year when F2P (Free to Play) Apps distinguished themselves as the clear winner for monetizing within the app ecosystem. Earlier in June of this year the figures were only 77% and 89% respectively.

As the year comes to an end, it's also important to take note of the games that simply crushed their competition. While there were many runner-ups there can only be two winners, when it comes to Paid and Free Apps. Undoubtedly when it comes to free though, the two reigning champions are Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans, respectively.

Looking at Paid though, and despite its age, Minecraft: Pocket Edition did quite well as the top performing paid app. Here's a list of the rest of the Top 10 Free and Paid Apps, and how they ranked.

Not only was Candy Crush Saga the most-downloaded title for all of iOS in 2013, the match-3 puzzler was also the highest-grossing game on Apple’s platform. It 'crushed' the free-to-play download charts.
