Does size matter? Phones. Tablets. and ‘Phablets’

Does size matter? Phones. Tablets. and ‘Phablets’

It seems like just a couple days ago I was talking to with a friend about how awkward the iPhone 5 feels to type on compared to the iPhone 4 or 4S.  Sure a bigger screen is cool and all, but when you change the size of a device like the iPhone by the height alone – something just feels out of place.

When we look at  phone’s in the 5-inch+ range there are some fairly interesting things to be aware of.  “Phablets” (as they’re being coined) has predicted shipments of 60.4 Million in 2013 (according to IHS iSuppli).  This is the equivalent to a 136% year-over-year growth on the 25.6 million shipments that occured in 2012 (just last year).

The data for the figures above comes from last weeks CES event where Huawei had its debut for its enormous 6.1″ Ascend Mate smartphone, (which is only 2cm small than the Kindle Fire tablet). IHS iSuppli Director of small and medium displays said,

“The move to ofer larger-display smartphones reflects the efforts of both device and panel makers to differentiate their products.”

“With consumers demanding more lifelike viewing experiences, the trend to offer such devices makes perfect sense, especially considering the increase in rich content that is being made available on smartphones.”
