In-game Purchases on Tablets Near 3x Higher Than Smartphones
A study from Magid and Playfirst has shown that 61 million gamers prefer tablets over smartphones. In fact, 69% of tablet owners regularly play games on their device and 31% of them purchase in-game virtual goods. The average users spends $48 a year, which equates to around $914 million cumulatively. This is nearly 3x the amount spent on smartphones which currently sits at $341 million.
Now don’t get me wrong, smartphone still has an average total of 54 million users, which is actually a 50% YOY increase from last year.
President of Magid Advisors, Mike Vorhaus, had this to say:
“We started seeing the emergence of the tablet as a huge gaming platform last year. Now tablet gaming growth is pushing big increases on in-game virtual goods spending and driving big revenue.
“The tablet is really the TV of video – the great majority of tablet owners love tablet gaming, and the tablet is becoming their go-to device for gaming.”
Lastly, the average tablet gamer downloaded nearly 25 games in the last 12 months, VS 20 on a smartphone. It is also evident that these growth patterns show no signs of slowing down.
