Lumosity hits 35 Million Users and now growing at 100K users a day

When one thinks “mobile games” they usually immediately go in the direction of: Angry Birds, Temple Run, Clash of Clans, – what have you.  Games that are generally, not the most “mentally stimulating” in an educational sense.  Well today, I am happy to see that that Lumosity has hit 35 Million users and, as of January, has been adding 100K new users ever-day.  The company sit at the #1 spot in the education category of Apple’s App Sore for both Free and Top Grossing.  They also have a noteworthy 17 million MAU (monthly active users) in the US.

Having discovered Lumosity WAY back in the day, in 2007 before anyone even knew what an app was, I vividly remember being up late one night after having been burnt out on bother World of Warcraft and Counter Strike, I asked myself, “I wonder if there’s a game online that will make me smarter”.  Lumosity happened to be founded in 2007 and has since received $67 million in funding, including $32 million last year from Discover Communications (the company behind the Discovery Channel).

CEO Kunal Sarkar said, the company has been growing 25% every quarter since it launched.  Due to its growth, Lumosity now has the world’s largest dataset on human cognition and over 1,500 researchers working with its Human Cognition project to study and find ways to improve human cognition.

With much of the year still ahead, the company is said to be focusing on mobile and international growth.  Part of this includes an iPad app in the near future, as well as expanding to Android.

Sarkar said in a statement,

“We’re committed to helping people from all walks of life remember more, think faster, and perform better in everyday life, and part of that goal is to be able to provide all of our members with the full Lumosity experience in their native language,”

“This internationalization will also allow us to study human cognitive performance with more academic researchers, neuroscientists, teachers, and clinicians around the globe to learn more about the real-life application of cognitive training.”
