Even if Apple only owns 18% of the App Economy it still pulls in near 400% more than Google. $5.1 million in revenue every-day to be exact. Google on the other hand, has about 75% of all app downloads – yet, only pulls in $1.1 million per day. While there are certainly more insights in the infographic below, it’s no surprise that Google Play has better search when it comes to typos in both name and category. According to a recent ‘State of the App Economy’ report from AppNation, they claim that the App Revenue will double from this years $72 Billion, to $151 billion in 2017. Leading the way, we have email, browser, and social networking apps. With that being said, commerce-enabled apps will be the biggest driver of revenues, followed by revenue from paid-downloads, in-app ads and purchase of virtual goods. While those without a smartphone (40% of people) won’t understand the pain of those of us with, those of us who DO have one know that without apps we may as well be using a feature phone (these are the old phones that just call and text – in-case you don’t remember). A study from Magid and Playfirst has shown that 61 million gamers prefer tablets over smartphones. In fact, 69% of tablet owners regularly play games on their device and 31% of them purchase in-game virtual goods. The average users spends $48 a year, which equates to around $914 million cumulatively. This is nearly 3x the amount spent on smartphones which currently sits at $341 million. Chartboost, the cross-promotion network for mobile developers, with over 16,000 games in their network and 6 billion game sessions every month has recently announced it’s launching a new back-end service that will power in-app purchases and stores inside mobile games.
