While it’s not “breaking news” Gartner’s research has revealed that smartphone sales have indeed exceeded those of feature phones for the first time, last quarter. Overall, global smartphone sales have increased by 46.5% to 435 million in Q2 of this year. Last years #’s were 225 million total. Feature phones meanwhile, saw a decline to 210 million units. When looking at Operating System share, Android takes 79% of the market with 177.9 million units, while iOS takes second place with 31.9 million units sold and a 14.2% share. With a market cap of about $5.6 Billion, BlackBerry temporarily halted trading in its shares today and announced the company had formed a special committee to research outside opportunities for the company – including: joint ventures, or even a sale of the company. The folks over at NativeX have shared two very insightful charts which show how engagement in mobile gaming has increased just over the past year. When looking at time spent in-games from Q3 2012 to Q1 2013, there is an evident 102% increase. The number of ‘power users’ (or players in this case) has also increased by 146% from 3.7% to 9%.
