The Post-PC Era and SDK Bloating

The Post-PC Era and SDK Bloating

First of all, the article in reference is using the term "applications" synonymously with "software". With that being said, Flurry seems to think that the US is "looksing its grip on the software industry". While this may be true given the evidence shown in the images below, when looking at ACTUAL software (not including applications) I feel that the U.S. is still strong in this market and will remain strong as enterprises require more complicated software solutions every-day. With that being said, let's take a look at the charts below and see what we can gather from them.
(If you want to read Flurry's Full Article on the matter you can do so here)

Shall we?

As deduced from the images above..

In image one, it is evident that the US has actually been behind the rest of the world since 2011 when it comes to "active apps by developer country". But then again, with China taking the #1 spot for largest smartphone market, and India just recently taking #2 - it's not hard to imagine that the US is behind in those areas.

Looking at image 2, this helps make things a little bit more clear as you understand how many of the aforementioned apps are actually "active". Interestingly, in 2011 The US led with 75%, in 2012 went up to 76% and then this year (2013) dropped down to 70%.

Looking at image 3, this one is kind of interesting, in Brazil's case that is, where 56% of time spent on apps are from developed outside of their original origin. In China is is more than evident that the local app stores are strong with 64% of time spent in apps being from China compared to the US's 59% of time spent for country of origin.

Lastly, it looks like Finland is on the rise when it comes to growth, although as the country matures it won't surprise me when their chart is near the 2.0 line like the rest of the leading countries.

A quick note on "SDK Bloating" according to NativeX.

SDK's, for those that don't know are "Software Development Kits". You can think of them as 'plugins' that you use for your Word Press site. With the means of enhancing apps, they're becoming more hindersome than helpful. There are SDK's out there to do just about anything.. even walk your dog (not really).

But let's take a look..

  • SDK for analytics
  • SDK for A/B testing
  • SDK for display ads
  • SDK for direct deal ads
  • SDK for mediation providers
  • SDK for video ad networks
  • SDK for offer walls
  • SDK for user acquisition insights

Indeed, there is an SDK for just about anything.. NativeX suggests that you should consolidate all your SDK's and find a solution that is an "all-in-one" per say. Perhaps their services may be of assistance to you in consolidating your SDK's.

Check them out.
