Top Mobile Trends of 2013 – Part 1 with: Forrester, IDC, Gartner, Mary Meeker, Emarketer, Yankee Group and Golden Gekko.

Top Mobile Trends of 2013 – Part 1 with: Forrester, IDC, Gartner, Mary Meeker, Emarketer, Yankee Group and Golden Gekko.

Loyalty and incentives are expected to support the space as 62% of consumers look for digital deals to secure bargains.

GoldenGekko went on to say,

“”Every brand needs a mobile website no matter how basic,”

Also adding: companies should develop multi-channel loyalty program with mobile at the center.

Some quick #’s:

41% of smartphone owners have made a purchase from their phones.

Of those..
16% bought apparel.
15% food and beverages
11% toys and games
11% electronics
8% home goods
4% Sporting goods
4% books
3% jewelery

..and 8% “other products”

47% of consumers confirm they use their smartphone to search for local information such as a local store they want to visit.  Another 46% look up prices on a stores mobile site.

Needless to say, there has been a tremendous platform shift over the years, and it’s no longer a question of iOS vs Android, but instead who are the digital platform leaders OVERALL, and which new platforms are emerging?

Companies and start-ups are beginning to embrace the idea of “Mobile First” more and more.  It’s evident that it’s turning into a competitive advantage for the large brands embracing it as well.

I.e.
Google
Facebook
Amazon
Ebay
Pandora
etc..

Sure, US Consumers may still be spending nearly twice as much time today on desktops vs mobile

..but..mobile is growing at 14x the rate of desktop. At this rate, if all other factors remain the same (in tech they rarely – if ever – do) in a couple years they could meet at a parity.

Most definitely, the biggest trend of 2013 will be an alignment of advertising spend with consumer attention. Consumer Attention being: TV, web, and mobile (which account for 80% of consumption). Surprisingly, despite the fact that only 7% of consumer consumption is from print an astounding 25% of ad spend still goes into it.

Lastly.

When we talk Design: UI,UX,UE.

This is likely the most contradictory trend of all.  As we strive towards simplifying services, accessibility, productivity and ease of use; we’re simultaneously moving towards more and more methods of interactions with devices which increase complexity for designers, developers and the end users.

These trends show two things:

1)Lean UX is gaining foothold among agencies and brands.

2)Omni-Channel UX approaches are becoming more and more critical to success when developing new services.
