Yahoo Acquires Tumblr | Major Flick’r Update & Seemless Confirms Merger with GrubHub
Damn. What a Monday. I knew taking that nap was a bad idea. In any case, if you missed any of the above, I’ll fill ya in on what’s been going down throughout today.
First..
While rumors surfaced last week – the deal was officially confirmed today that Tumblr will be acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 Billion in a mostly cash deal.
The deal is expected to close in the second half of this year, and Yahoo’s CFO Ken Goldman said,
“We do think those revenues will start monetizing materially [and] will contribute to revevenues in 2014 and beyond,”
“not just standalone for Tumblr but also incrementally, helping Yahoo to growth.”
With just $13 million in revenues last year and 300 million unique monthly users, Yahoo is making it clear that they’re taking careful consideration “not to screw things up”. Although, that could be hard with a platform where previously the CEO and Founder had steered away (and even informed their users) from ever having ads.
Tumblr CEO David Karp said,
“We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn’t changing.”
Regardless of whether that will hold true, Sunday Night (the day of the announcement) WordPress saw an influx of new users having over 72,000 blog posts imported within a single hour (which INCREDIBLY HIGH considering the site usually only sees 4-600 on a Sunday Night. While certainly only a fraction of Tumblr’s 50.9 Billion posts, it’s something that Tumblr and Yahoo clearly can’t ignore.
2nd..
Apparently Yahoo also made a major update to Flick’r where they’re going bat$hit crazy giving away a whole Terabyte to free users (enough for 537,731 photos). Yahoo recognized that, “Flick’r was once awesome, and it languished… now we want it to be awesome again.”
Well Yahoo, it will be up to the users to determine whether or not they consider a terabyte in their sphere of “awesomeness”, but time will tell.
More info here if you feel so inclined.
Lastly..
Seamless is to merge with GrubHub having GrubHub co-Founder and CEO run the direction of the new entity. While Seamless CEO Jonathan Zabusky will be the company’s president.
If you ask me, this is a good thing. Especially for the users, I’ll be looking forward to see how this merger progresses and what new things we see from the company.
That’s it for this one, I’m spent.
