Apple Breaks Top 10 at #6 Spot on Fortune’s 2013 500 List

Apple Breaks Top 10 at #6 Spot on Fortune’s 2013 500 List

Up from no-where-close to that last year (17th), Apple has broken into Fortune 500’s Top 10 (at number 6).  Fortune notes: “Apple is bigger than ever,”.  Facebook also made their first appearance on the list. Also adding, that while the company has “maintained more than disrupted” its product line, and even had to apologize for iOS 6 Maps and its Chinese warranty services, it “remains an innovation icon.”   Taking the #1 spot again is Walmart, with revenues of $469.2 billion, and profits just under $17 billion. Other companies to make the top 10 include: For other high-tech companies on the list: AT&T at 11th HP at 15th Verizon at 16th Microsoft at 35th Amazon at 49th Facebook at 482nd.   I suppose in some sense it’s refreshing to look at this top 10 list and remember that there are other industries out there than tech.  With that being said, I think that by understanding where these emerging industries are opens up even more opportunity for entrepreneurs to see...

10 Reasons Your Company Needs a Native App

Today we’re going to jump right into it.  No BS.  Just pure valuable content.  I’m going to bulletpoint 10 different benefits (reasons) Mobile Apps can deliver on.  If you’re wondering: “why on earth would I want an app“, then maybe you should really be asking, why not?  I’m sure by the end of this you’ll have some additional insights to make a better decision on which path to pursue.   10 Reasons Your Company Need A Mobile App   1)  Better Visuals The graphics and effects on a mobile website more often than not are very limited because of latency and framework. Native apps however, have the capacity to have superior graphics and effects, presenting much better looking visual to your users.  This is made possible by the apps requesting (and often receiving) permissions to use the full extent of hardware capabilities from within your phone.  Also, given the app is made for the device helps too ;).   2) More Features To elaborate on what was mentioned above,...

Apple App Store Nears 50 Billion App Downloads

And to celebrate, they’ll be giving the winner (who has the 50 billionth download) a $10,000 Apple Store Gift Card.  Additional runner-ups that are between 50billion and 50 billion and 50 will also receive a $500 App Store Gift card. Regardless of what you may think about Apple, it’s more than apparent that they’re pretty generous when it comes to hitting public milestones.  Naturally, from a marketing perspective it’s only to their benefit to turn this type of company milestone into an event to get customers excited about “what’s still to come”.   The company has also released the UK’s Top All-Time most popular free and paid apps: Top All-Time Paid Apps – iPhone: 1.     WhatsApp Messenger 2.     Angry Birds 3.     Doodle Jump 4.     Fruit Ninja 5.     Cut The Rope 6.     Angry Birds Seasons 7.     TuneIn Radio Pro 8.     MONOPOLY 9.     Draw Something 10.   Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock Top All-Time Free Apps – iPhone: 1.    Facebook 2.    Skype 3.    eBay...

Mobile Websites vs Native Apps

Mobile Websites vs Native Apps

In todays day and age a company without a mobile strategy is like a company without an email address.  Having an online presence alone just doesn’ seem to be cutting it anymore.  With more than 55% of those in the US posessing smartphones, these device owners need to have a way to interact with your brand on their mobile phone; one way or another.  Whether it be: mobile responsive design, mobile site, mobile site wrapped with a native wrappe, or a good ol’ native app. Obviously some are more pricey than others, and what’s right for one company may not be the best solution for yours.  Regardless, you should first and foremost consider who your user is and what type of experience you want to deliver to them.   Here’s an example.. AllRecipes.com contains a huge repository of recipes on their website, which they could easily be transfered to a mobile site. The thing is,  people who are checking Allrecipes on their devices aren’t trying to read recipes, they...

NAVER Line hits 150 Million Users

NAVER Line hits 150 Million Users

And it would appear in almost record time too. Geez. Having only been at 100 million in January, the Korean company has the majority of its users coming from Japan. One thing to note is: Unlike others who measure MAU’s (Monthly Active Users)Line’s measures themetric of registered users rather than active users — previously telling TechCrunch: “the proportion of registered to active monthly users can be as high as 80% worldwide.”   To compare this to notorious WhatsApp who DOES measure MAU, they said earlier last month that they now have more than 200 million active monthly users – claiming more monthly users than Twitter even. Line claims its global growth is largely attributed to the more than 10 million registered users it has acquired in Spain since launching Spanish iOS and Android apps late last year. Additionally, they’ve kicked off a TV ad campaign to raise Line’s profile in Spain. They also said that they’re seeing “steady growth” in the Spanish-speaking South American region, having added French and Brazilian Portuguese versions...

Apple iOS 7 Set to Rollout in June, with Full Launch in September

Apple iOS 7 Set to Rollout in June, with Full Launch in September

According to reports from both Bloomberg and AllthingsD iOS 7 is set to arrive: “On time” (in June) While iOS delay rumors have certainly been circulating around the web, with Jonathan Ive heading things up, I don’t think we have anything to worry about. The designs are said to embrace “flat” design methods (leaning towards solid colors and doing away with optical effects that mimic the textures and reflections of physical materials) as well as making major updates to the Calendar and Email apps that come stock with the iPhone. The main differences we’ll see is a modernization of the UI with the hope of adding a ‘fresh look’ to an OS that’s had roughly the same overall design elements for the past 6 years. Particularly,  changes to the basic functionality of stock apps and the look and feel of the entire OS. With WWDC just over a month away, we’ll see exactly how much these updates will really change...

Fiksu March 2013 Indexes

Fiksu March 2013 Indexes

Celebrating 2 years in business, Fiksu has also reported their March indexes , as well as recording their 100 billionth app user action.  When taking a look at the index data Fiksu found that the volume of daily downloads for the top 200 free iPhone apps and app marketing costs remained some-what balanced, similar to that of February’s. The Fiksu Cost per Loyal User Index increased by 5%/ 0.07cents , to $1.36, from February’s $1.29. The Fiksu App Store Competitive Index also dropped 4%,  to 5.02 million daily downloads in March from February’s 5.20 million. One thing to note however is that, this represents a 12% YOY increase from March 2012. With that being said, March’s “new normal” was good news for mobile app marketers. With increased inventories and costs staying relatively the same this reflects a maturity in the overall quality of apps and their ability to engage...
