Supercell Revenue up to $2.4 Million a Day

Supercell Revenue up to $2.4 Million a Day

Jesus.  That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear about this news.  $2.4 Million a day.  Really?  Not bad.  Actually, that’s awesome.  Supercell (the creators of Clash of Clans) is said to be the fastest growing game company ever.  This figure comes from an interview Supercell CEO Ikka Paananen had with Forbes where the company was valued at $800 million.  Seeing as they just raised an additional $130 Million, grossed $100 million in revenue last year in Q4, and already made $179 million in Q1 of 2013 – it goes without saying, they’re doing something right. At this rate by the end of 2013, some predict the valuation could reach $1 billion or more, making the company worth 2x the amount of EA’s mobile games division, itself built on over 900 previous releases.   In the interview Paanenen told Forbes, “It really is that simple – just design something great, something that users love,”   And in a separate one with PocketGamer.biz, “After working for big...

How Far Will YOU Go for a Deal? [INFOGRAPHIC]

How Far Will YOU Go for a Deal? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Thanks to the folks at Telenav we have a great infographic which has measured how far people are willing to go to redeem certain deals.  To name a few off the top: 11.3 miles for used cars (I assume you’re in the market to buy ;)), 9.8 miles for hotels & motels, 9.8 miles for new cars, and the rest you can see in the infographic below.   This type of data is the bread and butter for apps like Scout  which has main features completely based off GPS.  According to Scout’s Advertising GM Eli Portnoy, “Location is an extremely powerful tool for targeting mobile ads, but most advertisers are still applying a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to location targeting,” “For example, I live in Los Angeles and it makes no sense to show me an ad for coffee in Pasadena because I will never drive the nine miles it would take me to get there. That would take me over an hour.”   Needless to say, the...

Native vs HTML5 Which is Better?

Native vs HTML5 Which is Better?

Today we’re going to jump into once, and for all – which type of app is best. Native, or HTML5. One would think that facebook abandoning HTML5 would have been indicator enough to other developers that it may not be the path worth pursuing, but we’ll go ahead an entertain our die hard HTML5 fan boys for the sake of this article. So, if we simply look at the numbers, and how apps have grown since last year. There are currently over 775,000 native apps available in Apple’s app store, with Google Play having somewhere similar. If you add the 100K from Blackberry, and the 135K from Microsoft then we’re left with 1,785,000 native apps across the four stores. When it comes to HTML5 however..it’s not always the easiest thing to tell how many there are out there. For this, we saught out the data from Appcelerator, which ran a survey in 2012 with 3,600 developers to find that only 6% (or 216) of them had HTML5 Applications. With...

Mobile Malware Grows 163% in 2012 – 32M+ Infected Android Devices

Mobile Malware Grows 163% in 2012 – 32M+ Infected Android Devices

A new report from NQ Mobile released today has pulled malware data from 2012 that show some shocking figures. First, malware threats across all mobile platforms grew 163% in 2012.   The attacks were geared primarily towards Android devices, which was the platform of choice for almost 95% of threats according to NQ. NQ says, trends indicate things are likely to get worse before they get better. In February, a new type of malware that uses an Android device as a launch platform for infecting a target computer via USB connection was identified, the company said.  NQ Mobile co-CEO Omar Khans said in a release, “…what’s needed is a system that can detect threats in advance of infection and prevent them, something which so far hasn’t really been widely available.”   NQ Mobile’s report also revealed that more than 32.8 million Android devices were infected over the course of 2012(up 200% from 2011). Do take note however, Android as-a-whole grew substantially over the course of 2012.  In fact, according...

LinkedIN Acquires Pulse for $90 Million

LinkedIN Acquires Pulse for $90 Million

A BIG Congrats First of All. Had a chance to attend one of Pulse’s open-invite developer events a couple months ago and spoke with Co-Founder and CTO Ankit Gupta about how much progress they’ve made and how incredible of a framework/platform they’ve built to do the things that Pulse does.  If you’re not already familiar with Pulse, then you should know at the very least, it’s “a fast and beautiful way to read your favorite blogs, magazines, social networks and newspapers.”   Back to the point, LinkedIn has announced a deal to buy Pulse, at an offer of $90 million. While LinkedIN hasn’t announced any specific plans for Pulse, they note: it wants to be the “definitive professional publishing platform,” where “professionals come to consume content and where publishers come to share their content.” Other thoughts include: LinkedIn using the technology to improve LinkedIn Today, (its own aggregation service), gaining access to publishers that have already been acquired by Pulse, demographic data, and additional advertising opportunities. One thing that’s been...
