Google Play Hits 1 Million Apps

Google Play Hits 1 Million Apps

Up from just 500,000 apps last year, and 900,000 just last month, the Google Play store has entered 7 digits. This was officially announced yesterday by Sundar Pichai who leads the Android and Chrome teams here in San Francisco. Naturally, Pichai said something to the effect of the app growth being an evident indicator of Android’s strength on smartphones, but even more so on tablets.  While it may be the case that Apple has also surpassed the 1 Million App’s milestone, Google is first to make the announcement. This means a few things for android, the first obviously being that it has more than 1 million apps now, but is also now the most popular smartphone worldwide (if you measure by that metric). Pichai also announced that Google Play has seen more than 50 billion downloads, which is up from 20 billion just last year. This, and that RPU (Revenue per user) is now 2 and 1/2x more than what it was last...

The Apple App Store vs Google Play [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Apple App Store vs Google Play [INFOGRAPHIC]

Even if Apple only owns 18% of the App Economy it still pulls in near 400% more than Google. $5.1 million in revenue every-day to be exact. Google on the other hand, has about 75% of all app downloads – yet, only pulls in $1.1 million per day. While there are certainly more insights in the infographic below, it’s no surprise that Google Play has better search when it comes to typos in both name and category. Meanwhile, the Apple App Store has near double the users interested in mobile games (26%) vs Google Play’s 14%. Unsurprisingly, both Google Play and Apple lead their own App Store’s in number of downloads. The highest price for an app on Google Play is $200, while Apple has an app that is $999. More info in the infographic below, thanks to folks at Kinvey who provide mobile cloud...

Android Device Market Share for June. Hardware and OS

Android Device Market Share for June. Hardware and OS

It’s time again that nativeX has released their findings on what the most popular Android Smartphone is for the given month. In relation to last month, there isn’t much of a change aside from the fact that Samsung Galaxy S4 seems to be gaining a little bit of traction as far as device owners. The samsung Galaxy S3 however still proves to be the big winner with 12%$ of owners using it. 7% on the Galaxy S2, and then the rest are also Samsung owned devices as well. It still surprises me however that 60% of the devices are ‘Other’. When it comes to Android OS (Operating System) Market Share we have two different charts to gander at. That of the Google Developer Portal, and then That of NativeX’s portal which measures stricly gaming apps. It is evident that in both portals Gingerbread (37% and 21%), Jelly Bean (33% and 44%), and ICS (26% and 33%) (Ice Creme Sandwhich) still lead the way. See below for more...

More can be deduced from the image...

iOS and Android Account for 92.3% of Smartphone Shipments in Q1

iOS and Android Account for 92.3% of Smartphone Shipments in Q1

IDC’s latest numbers for Q1 of 2013 also show that of that, iPhone captured just 17%. IDC noted that both Android and Apple shipments combined increased approximately 59.1% YOY, totaling 199.5 million units to be shipped during the quarter. This is up from 2012’s 125.4 million. The report points out that iPhone’s had its “largest ever Q1 volume”. Despite the impressive numbers, Apple saw an overall decline among iOS usage as Android and Samsung led in both categories. When comparing the device share, iPhones represent 17.3% while Android loaded (samsung + more) devices had 75%. This is again, shipments not sales. At least in Tablet OS usage Apple continues to dominate. When it comes to 3rd place, Microsoft was able to surpass BlackBerry during Q1 with their Windows Phone at a growth rate of 133.3% YOY capturing 3.2% of shipments vs Blackberry’s 2.9%. When it comes to “sold” vs “shipped” IDC does not provide that information. If it’s anything like the Facebook Phone which just got slashed by AT&T...

FTC Begins Sending COPPA Letters to App Developers

FTC Begins Sending COPPA Letters to App Developers

The US FTC has begun sending out letters (two) to app developers in attempt to ‘prepare’ them for changes to the Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act taking effect on July 1st. The letter warns on several topics, one of which is the: restrictions on collecting the personal data from kids under 13.  As well as now covering things like video or audio bearing a “child’s likeness”. Currently, regulations only cover the gathering of information such as: names, addresses, and phone numbers. The FTC went on to further elaborate: “The revised COPPA Rule requires all developers of apps that are directed to children under 13 — or that knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 — to post accurate privacy policies, provide notice, and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing any ‘personal information’ from children,” The only parties currently exempt from the impending changes are the app platforms: Apple App Store, Google Play, Windows 8, and Blackberry World which tend to hav etheir own ‘self-appointed’ privacy...
