Android to overtake iOS this year with 58% of App Downloads

2013 is said to be the year where Smartphone developers become ‘Android-First’, but that’s not to say that  iOS won’t still dominate the tablet space.  New research presented by  ABI shows that smartphone app downloads will reach 56 billion this year, with Android set to account for a 58% share over iOS’s 33%. Windows Phone is expected to secure around 4%, and BlackBerry just 3%. When it comes to Tablets, app downloads are to hit 14 billion this year, Apple’s iPad(s) accounting for 75%.  Android is looking at 21% share with 4% from Amazon’s Kindle Fire alone, and the others to accounting for the other 17%.  Windows tablets will secure just 2%.   ABI Senior Analyst, Aapo Markkanen went on to say,  “Arguably the most pressing issue for Google is how much of this handset momentum will ultimately trickle down to tablets, where Apple is holding the fort remarkably well. “We would argue that in this context Google will actually benefit from the efforts by Amazon, since the presence...

Smartphones to Out-ship Features in 2013

Smartphones to Out-ship Features in 2013

According to a new report by market analyst IDC, for the first time ever smartphones are expected to outship feature phones this year (2013).  The firm predicts that vendors will ship an upwards of 918 million smartphones this year, which will equate to 50.1% of the total number of global mobile phone shipments.  IDC also forecasts by the end of 2017 1.5 billion smartphones will be shipped worldwide, accounting just over two-thirds of the total mobile phone forecast for the year. When looking to the east, China is set to remain the world’s largest market for smartphones; specifically low-cost handsets based on the Android operating system.   Melissa Chau senior research manager at IDC had this to say, “While we don’t expect China’s smartphone growth to maintain the pace of a runaway train as it has over the last two years, there continue to be big drivers to keep the market growing as it leads the way to ever-lower smartphone prices and the country’s transition to 4G networks is...

US Defense Department confirms plans to roll out 100,000+ iOS and Android Devices by next year

As discovered by 9to5mac, reports dated from back in October for  the U.S. Department of Defense indicate a preperation to approve a large number of iOS and Android devices for use on government networks.  Those reports were followed up with earlier this month with news that CACI International Inc was ‘modifying’ thousands of iPads for use in U.S. government agencies.  The Pentagon went on to further confirm plans to open its networks to 100,000 new devices from Apple and Google by this month next year.   The exact quote being, “The Pentagon said it wants employees to have the flexibility to use commercial products on classified and unclassified networks. It plans to create a military mobile applications store and hire a contractor to build a system that may eventually handle as many as 8 million devices.”   The move comes largely in part due to iPad’s and other iOS devices becoming more adopted by government agencies which formerly were filled by Blackberry,Linux, and others.
